A word about KDM6 tow mode: S+ECT and to me it feels like a gear lock version. By that I mean it will hold 4th or 3rd while requesting more throttle with light press and so far does not auto downshift, just keeps pullin’. This is a very good situation all around. It appears that the TC is locked up when in either of those gears so there’s not excessive heat being generated and the power is there. My truck is at full payload and the camper is at 3250#. Granted, my towing area is all prairie so I’m not testing in any mountain or hilly environment. It works really good for my purposes. No complaints, only kudos.

Truck is stock. Tune is reg, SLT and I’m using 91 gas. Today I had a slight head/crosswind @65 mph and my avg mileage came in at 13mpg.

    Tks, @PapaRee.

I am about 700 miles into my SLT tune. Couldn't be happier with the performance change and was easily worth the money to get it put on. My MPG has either stayed the same or improved a bit but it certainly has not decreased at all.

The only thing that stands out to me as odd, and I haven't seen anyone else post anything like this is when I am gradually accelerating in 3rd between 18-1900 RPM I can hear a high pitched whine coming from the engine bay. It doesn't make the noise every time and it doesn't do it at any other RPM or in any other gear. Neither will it make the noise on a hard acceleration. It doesn't matter if the engine is still cold or up to operating temp. I noticed the noise the same day after flashing the tune and figured it may have gone away by the 500 mile mark, but it hasn't.

It is definitely not engine pinging/knocking, but I don't know what it is or if it is something to be concerned about. I have tried recording the noise but it doesn't come through.

My truck does the same and this is not KDMAX 6.0 related. Other tunes have it.
I think it is HP fuel pump noise, someone said that it could be the tranny pump noise.
I wouldn't worry about. 1st time I noticed back in November December 2020.

That whine/whistle is not related to the tune. It is a very commonly found "problem" and there are two threads I found on here where people posted a bunch of videos and describe exactly that noise.

What you'll notice is that it only happens when the AC compressor is on. Turn off your AC (also make sure it's not on the defrost fan position or AC will be on) and the noise goes away. I got my truck in December, so I rarely ever had the AC on while driving for months after that, so I didn't notice it until April or so when it warmed up outside.

You will also notice that is is NOT throttle related. You can be cruising downhill and it creeps up to 1800 rpm and will make the noise. Also not gear related

There are a couple of theories on the issue, and I can also add some personal experience. One theory is there is some climate control tubing/evap/ductwork, etc etc that naturally makes the noise due to "normal" function. Aside from beginning to rip out hard to reach bits, no one has come up with a way to practically track this down. The second theory is that it is related to the compressor pully having an engagement or harmonic issue at that RPM.

As far as the second theory, I tested the gap between the pulley and the compressor, and mine was out of spec. It was below the clearance tolerance range that Toyota specs. Here's where it gets wild. Took the pulley off and added a shim washer (toyota actually makes a kit for this issue, but you can make your own with a thin tiny washer) and put it back together and then the gap was within spec. Drove around and NO MORE NOISE. It was wonderful. Figured that, well, that proves that...maybe we can get a TSB started! Then...a couple of weeks later...faintly I heard the noise...then louder...then louder... and now the stupid thing is back to the original volume of the whine! So, that shoots a huge hole in my theory. I have not had the chance to remeasure the gap to see if somehow it could have changed (don't see how). I am tempted to add one more shim and get on the high side of the tolerance range and see if that makes a difference (either temporarily or perhaps permanently).

Amazing to me that Toyota hasn't addressed the issue. It is HIGHLY annoying and happens on a ton of the new trucks.

It’s your ac. But it’s not broken. My 2017 has that high pitched sound like running your finger on the tip of a wine glass. My 2017 ac still runs ice cold even in 100+F temps here in SoCal even in stopped traffic

Thanks this is good to hear. I don't recall hearing the noise prior to getting the tune I may have just been a bit more vigilant after flashing to notice any potential changes. (Positive or Negative) On my drive home from work today ill turn the A/C off and see if that address it. I purchased my truck at the end of March and it was warm pretty soon after so I have been using the A/C basically since I bought the truck.

Big thanks to @wahoobie for letting me stop by on my way home from work to get the KDMAX tune. Super easy to work with. Although I haven’t driven far yet, I can already tell the transmission is so much more responsive. I’m looking forward to getting more time with it.

Been tuned for almost 1k miles and so far am pretty happy.

One thing I noticed today: The idle doesn't seem to fluctuate up/down with the AC compressor anymore. Is that right?

I was idling in a drive thru with the AC on and noticed a slight vibration in the whole truck, which made me notice/think about how the idle used to go up and down before the tune.

Not going through 98 pages but I remember you all doing dyno numbers and comparing but whats the differences in hp/tq numbers from stock and kdmax? I cant remember

I think this would be a good option instead of supercharging and regearing if money is an issue like majority of us haha

This was a couple that were done.
But the smooth shifting, aggressive throttle and overall drivability is what makes it worth doing.

Hey guys since this is the most active tuning thread on tw it seems, posting this here for visibility. Mat needs TCU reads to add support into 1.3. Hopefully some of you guys can help out

    —————————————————

If you have a 3.5L tacoma 2016 + ANY ECU ID, please read your TCU (read TCU button) and submit the files to zendesk

We would like to have full support for the TCU when we release 1.3.0 but we are still missing some!

    TCUs that we have:

    04B01
    04B02
    04B03
    04B04
    04B30
    04B33
    04B91
    04B81
    04A61
    04B14

If your ECU ID is not on that list, please read your TCU and submit the file.

Please be sure to name it like this:
    TCU read (ECU ID)

    for example:
    TCU Read 04C20.vfc

Anyone have any issues with jolting or bucking with higher rpm after the kdmax tune? I’m going to try a reflash and see if that fixes it.

    Yes.
