Inside door panels, protection from dog paws. Ideas?

Just got my brand new 2021, my dog is going to ride in the back a lot over the years. She prefers to step on the arm rest of the door, instead of staying on the seat, to get her head out the window.

Anyone have experience installing a protective cover, or maybe a universal molded trim piece that covers the arm rest? I worry that over the years she will scratch up the door panel/arm rest...

Any ideas of possibilities for long term protection?

There are nylon fabric shields available that cover the doors, hang on the window ledge. Look around on the net.

Anyone have experience with these? I worry the plastic clips could scratch the window when you roll it up... But these could work well.

Thanks, that harness hanging off the grab handle does seem like it would solve the problem, but does that prevent your pup from sticking their face out the window (if they do that)?

 

Lol, no, pups still get nose prints on the window and can still stick their heads out ( they love it and I kind of like seeing little dog faces in my side mirrors). I can deal with that though, getting them off the doors panels was really my main concern and that is not an issue now.

 

Also, those side pieces zip up and down. Easy to get the dogs in and out without taking off the whole thing / or lifting them over. Let me see if I have a pic.

IF it were me, I'd go with these. An 1" wider and less costly. Would not be much invested if they wear out in a couple years.

 

we have this same one and it works awesome. The dogs can still stick their faces out the window but it keeps the muddy and dusty paws off of the doors.

 

My gf had the seat cover with the sides that hang from the oh shit handles and moved onto a seat cover with the door panel covers that mount on the window strip because they are a lot more convenient. I now have the old seat cover in my Taco minus the sides. I'd probably go with the window mount panel covers for the convenience factors. If you've got tint installed and it was done well they shouldn't affect it.

 

Duluth Trading mud room and the weather tech door panel covers. The mudroom side panels weren’t protecting the door panels as well I’d like, but the sand and fur was well contained and off the seats and there was no way they’d fall down in the footwell with heavy braking.
The Weather Tech covers are good quality canvas. Only issue is if you roll the window all the way down they might lift up and need to be reset in the window channel. No scratches on the glass, the plastic is pretty thin.
I did have my dog’s paw find the switch under the canvas once and roll the window all the way down. I saw her in the sideview mirror with what looked like more than half her 29lbs out the window, now I use the window lock button to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

I had the same worry as you with my dogs - they stand on the same spot. I'm constantly putting the seats up and down and grabbing tools and such from behind/under the seats so worrying about a protector would have been more hassle than what it was worth for me. I have a 55 lb cattle dog and a 75 pound golden doodle and I do not really worry about keeping their nails trimmed. I take them on rides 3-5 times per week. After 5 years there really is not any damage to the door materials at all. Toyota generally does an exceptional job of crafting interior components that take a beating.

There are solutions now. Not as many that work for me outside of a crate 4 years ago
