Is there a product out there that helps restore weather stripping? (The color)

Hey y’all.

so I’ve noticed the weather stripping on the back of the cab has seen better days. I guess the best way to describe it is oxidation wear.

Is there any paint safe product I can apply to it to bring it somewhat back to its original clean look?

yeah there's lots of products that work pretty well at that, i use meguires back to black and it holds up for about a month before i need to reapply

 

Any product will be temporary.

Best to replace. Then done. Otherwise, it becomes a frequent maintenance task and it will eventually fail. You're only postponing.

 

I've heard good things about Zymol. It helps bring life back to the rubber and protects it. It's kind of expensive though.

Superlube claims you can put the silicone grease on rubber trim bits to rejuvenate its youthfulness with radiant color.


Edit: also I watched this guy on the web take a torch to plastic seats and with a quick flick the white hazing was gone…

 

Look at Solution Finish. I just used that on my 2008 Sport 4 x 4 a few weeks ago. It's a little pricey but lasts much longer than most trim dressings.

 

That looks good, but it is temporary. It will look the same as before after 1 wash, or in 3-4 weeks. My cowl trim piece looked like that too, and I replaced it. Looks brand new again, because it is.

 

Just picked up some Cerakote wipes which is similar to all these but ceramic based and should last 6 to 12 months. Haven't used them yet but I'm looking forward to the results.

I personally use 303 Tire Balm, not the same stuff that what was tested in the video. I use a sponge to apply, not just on tires but pretty much on everything including my dash. Works very well on the black trim that seems to surround my wife's SUV

 

That video is what convinced me to get the Cerakote haha

 

I’ve always just used plain Silicone Spray on a rag. Nothin’ fancy.

 

The problem is this anything you put on say plastic where the windshield wipers are or any kind of trimming or even the plastic under the hood anything that’s black and you apply a product to it especially in direct sunlight or when it’s been heated, it basically bakes into it and causes it to accelerate the fading process. Example the faded plastic underneath the windshield wipers if you put armor all or similar product on it in direct sunlight or in any time where it’s warm to the touch it bakes into the plastic and cooks it so in a few weeks or so it will fade and you will need to reapply were if you left it alone the natural color was staying much longer once you’ve put a product on it you’re basically putting it on it for life. Of course unless you’re talking about bare-bones by the chemical guys that shit is the bomb and if you put that in your wheel wells and your undercarriage that’s the best damn product I’ve ever used will it work for your situation where you got to lose at this point point

Here is your awnser for a couple years. Ceramic coating. I use carpro cquartz 3.0 UK to coat my cars and the remainder I use on the plastic trim. I live in California where it is 100 degrees on and off for about 4 months and it holds up great.
It is pricey but one application and you are done.


Picture is a little over a year since I applied it to my lower bumper trim and Mirrors. They were that ashy color when I bought the truck in April 2020. Still looking great over a year later with one application

 

My buddy uses the same stuff, great price/performance compared to others. What's the application process like on the trim vs the paint?

 

For the paint, you have to fully decontaminate the car, compound it, polish it, clean it all with alcohol and then slowly apply it, and take it off within the 5 min window.
While the trim, you just clean it with soap and then apply it

 

In my experience

1) do not use heat gun or torch as it turns into a blotchy mess over time

2) Megs back to black is garbage

3) solution finish will last longer than Megs

4) I have used GTechniq C4 with great success. Gotten over a year out of it before needing another application.

5) for the people in the back 303 and Megs are trash for restoring trim as they are dressings and will wash off with rain.
