    Hello,

I did my first oil change on 21 OR yesterday, and almost everything went smooth. I just had a question about the oil canister; after replacing the cartridge, I tried to install the canister by hand. I was able to hand tighten the canister a couple of turns (40%) before I needed the filter wrench. Is this normal? I turned it a couple of times with the wrench and then took it off to ensure I was not cross threading, and I wasn't. I ask because some people will hand tighten until the canister meets the block. I appreciate any help thanks.

Pretty normal. It's the oring / machined hole that's causing the friction

Just as @Skydvrr mentioned above, it's the "O" ring giving you the resistance

Welcome to the forum. You definitely don’t want to over tighten it, many people have broken the plastic ones and replaced them with the aluminum one.

Did you smear some oil on the new o-ring? Could be a bear to remove next time if you didn't.

If u didn't wipe the oil off the inside diameter of the housing on the engine side, there was probably enough residual to provide lube.

Just curious after you torqued (or tightened) it, where did the cannister end up in relation to the metal clip? Mine stopped in between the three tabs and single tab following those; closer to the single tab.

Thanks. Judging from where mine was out of the factory and where 18 ft-lbs took it when I tightened, mine must've been a smidge under torque out of the factory. I always like to mark bolts and such first time taking them off so I at least know I'm somewhere in the neighborhood when putting them back. Well... at least the ones that truly matter. Not going to wear down the torque wrench on skid bolts...
