That's not a good example though. They refused to prosecute the criminal, if they had they would have gotten a lot of their stuff back. It's their choice if they want to limit the punishment of a relative to a smack on the wrist, up until they start involving third parties. At that point it's a legal matter, they are already victims of their son, and they want the pawn shop to suffer all the losses while they continue to let him get away with it. My mother would have prosecuted, which is one of many reasons I would never steal her stuff. I'm sure he learned his lesson after his time out though...

    Yeah.
Actually they did prosecute if you read the whole story, son got probation and has to pay both his parents and the pawn shop (but never has).

This is a tough one, I can see both sides. In reality, the thief has actually stolen from 2 parties. The pawn broker should be able to prosecute and force cooperation from the original victim regardless of whether the original victim chooses to press charges.

Maybe being able to buy your stuff back for 10% of what the pawn shop gave for it is fair, since that's about what they pay for stuff.

You're right. I stopped after the part talking about how 70% of thefts are family and most don't prosecute.

And the problem with buying it back for less than the shop paid is that it is a system that could be exploited. Your buddy "steals" your tools, sells them for $500, you buy them back for $50, and you profit $450. There are dishonest people out there, and they will cheat the system where ever they can. I was in a Chipotle once, they screwed up a burrito and so they gave it to a homeless guy right outside. He comes in not even 2 minutes later and starts demanding his money back because they screwed up his order. If it wasn't for the 2 officers in line behind me who saw the whole thing, I genuinely believe they would have given him money to stop him from making the scene that he was. Honestly I was as impressed as I was dumbfounded.

An old friend of mine used to have an auto parts store in San Francisco. The thefts stopped when he started bringing his doggo to work. He looked pretty much like this dude. They were more afraid of him than his guns.

That's not how it works. Your buddy doesn't get $500 he gets $50. Then the pawn shop puts a $500 price tag on the tools.

Indeed. So much WTF to go around.

Probably could've escaped charges if he'd simply started the truck and driven off.

The way it works in utardia is my buddy "steals" my tools and sells them to a pawn shop for $500, and I buy them back from the pawn shop for what they paid, $500. So that scam doesn't work. I'd rather the pawn shops be treated like an individual in possession of stolen goods. If someone buys stolen goods off Craigs list and they get caught, the least that will happen to them is the police will return the items to the rightful owner. The buyer of stolen goods isn't going to go to the rightful owner and say "you owe me $500 for those tools." But, here is the land of bought and paid for politicians, that is exactly what happens. You want your tools back? Pay the pawn shop.
