solid logic right there, but i get bored and my mind wanders. suppose i don't have my tools here either so that might be an issue haha. just dropped a whole bunch of money on a new CV axle, and a whole bunch of shifter parts too so i guess i should start with that before forking over more money for something i don't need/already have.

Plus bolt on vs welded..I wish mine were bolt on. Might cut them off some day and make them bolt on. Purely to repaint them every few years. So you done good there.

Crazy story. I remember reading that on FB when it happened. They post bear sightings multiple times a week so it doesn't totally surprise me. Not the time of year I'd be wandering around unprotected.

 

Wife and I are out touring Montana for a few weeks looking at retirement options.

Doing recon on what towns/cities have to offer in the way of activities, supplies, and travel distance to get beer and TP when we run out in the middle of a lazy day.

Currently in the Eureka/Kalispell area for the day. Will be heading over the Rockies towards Browning and over to Great Falls tomorrow.

If anyone can recommend some cheap/free camping areas along that way, it would be great. Thanks!

We aren't planning to stay in Browning, just going that direction towards GF. Looks like there might be some camping options up along the east side of the rockies going south from Browning towards Choteau. Just skirting through that zone and just need a place to plop for an evening.

 

Just hang a right toward the mountains if heading south on 89 between Browning and Choteau. Most of those dirt roads end at a trailhead, and there’s campgrounds with vault toilets and such at a lot of em. Probably worth taking a pair of binoculars and looking for critters (griz) around Ear Mountain off of Teton Canyon Road or South Fork Road. There’s also USFS campsites back in there too. Mill Falls, Green Gulch, Cave Mountain, West Fork, etc.

The front around that area is one of my favorite parts of the state.

Since we are not interested in touring around Glacier Park on this trip, and going through Browning is just that, going through, we might just avoid the hassle of that area and go south from Kalispell down through Missoula and then eastward.

 

If/when you do, the eastern route around Flathead Lake is certainly more scenic.

 

Glacier does seem like it’ll be an extra headache this year. Plenty of good stuff down the Seeley-Swan if you go south down that route. Agree with @Twizted that the east side of Flathead is more scenic if you go south on that route though. Either way, be sure to stop in for a meal at Trixie’s Antler Saloon in Ovando when you’re headed eastward from Missoula on Highway 200!
