Finally got a bike rack for the Taco. I miss the convenience of a tailgate pad, but my bike is an XL and it was really inconvenient with the tonneau.

I’d spend my $$ surfing when Hawaii. Although I know they have some rad trails.

What kind of rack is that? Do you happen to know the max supported wheelbase?I’m in the market for a new one. My old Küat rack won’t work with my new XL Stumpjumper as the wheelbase is too long. I just got a tailgate pad to hold me over until the 1up racks are back in stock.

    BTW, nice looking truck.

Love me those RPF1s, but don't look right on Tacos IMO. Get the Turds.

Learn the hard way... First order of business, get better tires (great choice with the Assegai/DHR2). Get DD on the rear, and stop worrying about flats. Then, get the Oneup Pump and EDC tool. The pump is excellent and having it on the frame with the tool is priceless, bailed me out plenty of times. Pumps also take care of burped tires without freezing the sealant inside.
The pump also has a CO2 head and a place to hold a canister inside it as well. So if you need to throw in a tube, the CO2 will inflate it quickly, and the pump tops it off to desired pressure.

Get the Oneup Pump, honestly works great. No unscrewed valves, large volume, high quality, great price.

    Where you been buddy?!

    EDIT: fixed stoopid spelling mistakes...

Collapsed in a heap of pain and self-loathing in central Kansas, as of late... otherwise, selling a house, buying a house, taking online Linux classes, and holding down a career during a pandemic... you? Looks like your Strava riding has been going well, hope you're staying in the shade out there!

    My latest shenanigans: https://advcyclistblog.wordpress.com/2021/06/11/151/

In a fit of redemptive rage upon returning home; I registered for ORAMM single speed and Gravel Worlds single speed... I may need professional therapy by Fall, but looking to book a Fruita/Grand Junction trip by then to ease my mental anguish, and will be buying a FS (with gears even), so I'm narrowing down those choices.

I'm a huge bronze wheel fan. I almost didn't get quicksand because I wanted bronze wheels and don't love that combo. Even after I got the QS taco I still tried to talk myself in to bronze wheels. Luckily QS looks great in black. I did the FN 16" version of the 4Runner TRD Pro wheels. Not sure if they are making the new ones and possibly have color choices, but a knockoff might be an option to get the wheel and color you like.

I remember finding a FB group back in like 2012 when I went to Maui. Seemed like a good group that would be willing to show people around. Couldn't make it work in a week long trip that time. I'd try and connect with some locals on FB or MTBR or something and go from there.

I take it you have the larger one? I've meant to get one for ages, but with a working pump and tool it's been hard to justify.

Wish they had something other than black. I wouldn't mind snagging another pair of shorts but my all black collection could use some variety!

Hah! Although sharing a tandem in the ocean with my teenage son wasn't much better. At least he was a strong paddler.

It’s a Yakima Hold Up. Their website says max wheelbase of 48”

Just looked up my bike specs and for an XL my bike is listed at 1230mm or about 48.4”

Thanks. My bike is listed as 1268mm, which is almost 50" long. Its a long boi apparently. 1up is about the only rack I've found that will hold it within spec. My old Kuat rack has a max wheelbase of 44" listed... should have seen how it looked when I tried to put my bike on there. o_O

    What’s your wheel size?
If you’re on a 29” then I’d guess it’s definitely a no go on this rack. 27.5” might still work. I’ll load my bike up and check it out when I’m home.

Yeah, its 29". I think I'm just gonna use the tailgate pad until I track down a 1up. Who knows, I may end up really liking the tailgate pad, but would still like a rack to have the option to haul the bike with my wife's car from time to time if needed.

What tailgate pad did you go with? I have an XL stumpjumper and getting it to properly fit on racks is a pain - and in the end I really enjoy the tailgate pad! You can't really secure the bike to the truck, but I have a long bike lock that I use to secure to the bed mounts as a deterrent.

I went with the evoc duo. Its more like a half tailgate pad. 99% of the time, I am only hauling one bike, so I think it will work great and no worries about a flap for the tailgate handle and backup camera. I am planning to do the same about securing the bike by locking it to one of the bed tie downs.

I'm really amazed it took someone as long as it did to come out with a design like that.

A while back I asked from some Park City suggestions for an upcoming 4 week trip. After PC we’ll go through Colorado … thinking that Fruita/GJ will be too hot for our Pacific Coast bodies so thinking of Crested Butte and/or Salida. The former has no reservable campgrounds available which makes me think it will be crowded (4th of July weekend too) and they are starting to regulate dispersed camping there. Will we be missing out on anything special if we camp and ride around Salida instead? We are intermediate riders, prefer not to shuttle, used to 10-20 mile rides with 1500 to 2500’ elevation gain. Oh, and if any of you who camp a lot are worried about getting old, the lifetime Federal Recreation Pass for seniors means a lot of BLM or even Forest Service campgrounds are $4 to $10 per night. That’s less than a post-ride burrito and beer! But you gotta be 62 or older.
