either way, it's been too many sunny days to be cooped up inside, I'm an eager beaver to get outdoors and meet people and do things!! :plane:

And my point is that there aren't homeless people waiting to dig their fingers into your food at the park here. They're too busy nodding off somewhere else.

Photographic proof from the Creston park picnic area in SE Portland from right now:
    Creston.jpg

Be careful though... that little girl and her mom might try and steal your foods and start a fight.

Right there with ya on that.

I'm pretty stoked about the potluck idea. Hoping we can get at least 15 peeps interested in attending. If we can, I'll make it happen.

I apologize for my ignorance of the extent of Portland's homeless crisis - I suppose I assumed since the whole I-5 and I-205 corridors (and all of I-84 within city limits) were lined with homeless camps that the smaller community parks would also be populated.... Nice looking park though!

That's funny because I was gonna say most of the big camps are along the interstate corridors (and a giant mess). Don't get me wrong the homeless situation is out of control here but the parks are one place it isn't too bad.

To be fair, I went to Laurelhurst park the other day and left without getting out of my truck. Two of the streets next to the park were fully lined up and down the block with homeless camps spilling out into the street. On both side in some places. I was too concerned about my truck getting broken into to park anywhere near there.

So I think you had a valid concern. However most parks in the city are not like that at all. I wouldn't pick a park where I thought we all had to worry about our shit while having a good time. No where in the city is truly safe from break ins, but you can limit your risk some.

Note: I am not saying all homeless people steal, are bad people, or anything like that. Desperate people do desperate things though and I keep too much shit in my truck. :crapstorm:

Does anyone know if I add a poll to the thread, if it can be removed after it's no longer needed?

I would be down to join on a weekend. How about a place like Mile McIver Park?

    Love that park.

I was thinking something in town would be easier for most to get to easily and quickly. The parks I mentioned don't get crazy busy usually and are fairly centrally located. We have people from all over the metro area in here.

Also Portland will allow us to have BYOB with our permit. Cannot have a BBQ without beer IMO.

EDIT - just checked, max per site at McIver is 25 peeps

I gotcha . I was just at Oaks Park last weekend and they might have space available for rent. Not sire about their alcohol policy.

That's a interesting idea. I just found this:

"Outside alcohol is prohibited; alcohol must be purchased from Oaks Park and must be ordered a minimum of 28 days before the rental date."

Lame. Who the fuck orders drinks a month in advance?

WABDR was cool we did it in about 4 days. Hopefully the washout on one of the legs isn’t too bad now. Here’s a vid of the trip my friend made.

It took an hour on hold to get someone from parks and rec to talk to. Was starting to wonder if they were actually going to answer the phone. The permit is going to be cheaper than I thought it would be. As long as we stay under 50 people ish, we don't need a special use permit, don't need to provide insurance, don't need to provide portable restrooms and are allowed to BYOB. Things I wasn't clear on before the call.

With that in mind, we're doing this. I am thinking:

    Saturday July 17th
    Woodstock Park
SE 47th Ave & Steele St, Portland, OR 97206
11-4 (reservation will be all day, so people can stay or show up whenever they want)
    Potluck
    BYOB (Beer / wine only)
    Rain or shine

I'll bring a grill, burgers, hot dogs, buns, basic condiments, paper plates, and napkins. If you have dietary restrictions, but sure to accommodate yourself.

Bring some games, cornhole, whatever else ya got.

I am going to add a poll to the thread once the date is set. Please respond to the poll if you are going to come, or may be coming. That will enable me to bring enough burgers / dogs for everyone, and give everyone else an idea how big of potluck dishes to bring.

I will put out a donation box. Donations going to pay for the site fee, burgers, hot dogs, etc for everyone. Anything left over will fund the next potluck. Don't let this stop you from coming, completely optional. I figure this is gonna cost me $100-$200, so offsetting that would be awesome. I do want to ensure we have at least a burger and or hot dog for everyone who shows up.

Woodstock has plenty of street parking in sight of the picnic area, on SE Steele. There is an unfenced off leash dog park very close to the area. There is also a smallish playground nearby.

If this date works for a decent number of people I will reserve the site tomorrow.

At this point if you want a vaccine you have one. I will not be wearing a mask, and I don't expect anyone else to. Mentioning this in case this makes you uncomfortable. This is a potluck, so that means shared food, etc. Be ok with that.

As always with events I plan, I want this to be a welcoming event for everyone. Please come to have a good time, do your best to get along with everyone and don't be that drunk guy.

If this goes well, we can do another in August.
