Advice for Rack system

Hi there,
I am new to this forum and have spent a ton of time reading threads about bed rack systems. I have a 2018 TRD Pro crew cab with a 5' box. I'd really like a system to haul my 12' jon boat, canoe, and camping gear. Ideally, a tonneau and adjustable rack system. I am in Northern Ontario, Canada and it seems we do. not have many options. I had a quote for a Bakflip tonneau and rack for $2300 plus tax installed.

Is there a better option? I have looked at used...I found this system and wonder if it would be okay? I have no idea the brand...guy is asking $500. Thoughts? or ideas??

I don't own one but I think a 13 foot Jon boat would be tough to fit on a bed rack without some type of bed extender plus it has to have some weight to it? I think if it was me I would look at getting a trailer.

 

It is a light plastic-it is a SunDolphin and weights 110 lbs. I have a 2.5 hp Honda motor.

The pictured rack looks like an @OverlandRacksOntario rack (I think?) otherwise it might be a DIY knock off with no brand.

I think you'd be better off the with Hitch extender for the boat.

 

Hmmm...I thought about the bed extended...I'd like to be able to take the boat and/or canoe if I'm camping and would need the truck bed for hauling the gear.

 

Another option might be a leer cap with some roof racks, or even a small trailer.

Keep in mind, if you plan on getting a bed rack, or leer cap you will need to get bed stiffeners to reinforce the bedsides.

You might look into a ladder rack as well. Typically a bit larger and definitely taller than most overlanding racks. You could also do a soft topper under the ladder rack if youre still looking weather proof the contents of the bed a bit.

Hello up there in Leaf Nation(or Sens Nation Etc..), I have a couple 12 Ft Old Town kayaks, and I decided to go with a Retrax Tonneau cover and the Yakima Overhaul HD + soon to be adding UpTop Bravo roof rack(when they finally finish it) that way I can utilize the whole length of my DCLB for tie down points if I dont have my J brackets on and space other gear/cases/bags ... also plan on using that length to haul some lumber

 

this method works great for me. Ive had it on three seperate trucks now and i dont see a reason to ever go back. Canoes or long lumber can go on the rack, field goal post is removable, and leaves enough room to crack the tailgate and open the tonneau cover without removing it. Soft tonneau keeps things relatively dry in the bed and rolls up if hauling anything tall.

 

for reference, the 2ng gen access cab has 16' trim boards on it, the ram has a 6' bed and has a 10' pipe on it.

 

that's a great setup - I'm trying to figure out a system for my new truck (2014), since it came with no rack or cover. My old Tacoma had a cap with yakima racks which were ok for light-ish loads of lumber, my sea kayak, etc. I do carpentry too so 16' boards with ease sounds great, and the flexibility of the tonneau cover and removable rack thing in the back of your truck is really appealing! I've been cruising the forums and researching online and haven't seen a combo like this yet. Can you offer any more info about the "field goal post" on the back? Did you fabricate that yourself, and which rack is sitting above the cab, does that just latch on? Sorry for all the questions, but any info is greatly appreciated.

Seems like the only tonneau/rack combo (without modifying) is the retrax and yakima HD which is up at around $2k. I also wonder how a retractable tonneau would fare in northern New England, or anywhere that gets lots of snow and ice. not a problem, the rack over the cab is a single Thule bar with the uprights that sit inside the door frame. The one off the trailer hitch is adjustable In height, and was a Yakima rack. They are both older models, I honestly sourced it all from Craigslist and pieced it together. Total was probably 200.00.

ive had soft tonneaus on all my trucks, parked outside through Minnesota winters. I just scrape the snow off and hit it with my hand break up any ice before I roll it up and I’ve never had a problem.

one other nice hack, if you can find the older rack systems with round bars, 3/4” iron pipe with a couple wraps of electrical tape around where they connect is the same size as the factory supplied Thule and Yakima bars.

5 minutes at the local hardware store and you can get bars any length you want with iron endcaps that will accommodate whatever width boat/lumber/kayaks you put up there. Also, when you forget to pack your tent, you can drape a tarp over your canoe and sleep in the bed (found that one out on accident)

 

asked the same thing and retrax is in North Dakota, I have aneighbor has had one for must be like 10 years and as long as you clear snow and dont let cycles of snow/melt/freeze etc.. then it is fine, when I bout my Retrax/Yakima Overhaul set up i figured I would be opening and closing it allot during blizzards etc...
