Last time I was on a roof I suddenly was overcome by the thought:

    "You don't belong up here!"

No close call, just that very clear thought. Five years and I haven't been on a roof since. Sometimes even a hard head listens.

I don't mind getting on the store or the shop, the house is a lot worse than those. I've been on it once to seal the chimney.......not again for me :D

Depends on how much insulation there is in the attic, at the store, it's not that loud.

It's not bad. It's kind of soothing, really.

$5K for shingles? How big is your house?
A 2k sqft house would cost $12k at least to shingle in this area.

We did metal on our house the last time our roof needed replacing. Did it ourselves. Not again. But we are glad we did it. It eve helps keep the house cooler in summer

Our house is still asphalt, but MILs is steel; zero appreciable difference in the noise in the house. Now, out in the garage at the MILs, which has no attic/insulation, you really hear it, but in the house it's not an issue.

Shingles on our house, and when we moved in the insurance company said they wouldn't insure the roof so we put new shingles on, complete tear off and redo, with whatever ice guard something or other. Basically another row of tar paper at the bottom edge. 10 years later the insurance paid for a new roof after a severe storm.

My self and a couple friends put a white metal roof on my house ~40 years ago. Lots of nails, on top of the old asphalt shingles. I can't hear it rain unless the windows are open. A few years ago the paint was fading and coming off showing the galvanizing underneath. I hired a guy to power wash and repaint. Looks like new and has never leaked.
