There is a well documented issue with the super white 040 single stage paint across many Toyota models, but a formal extended warranty, customer care program or recall has not been extended to the 2016+ Tacomas. I have not seen a clear consensus on the cause, since it does not appear to effect the other single stage colors you mentioned. Keep in mind that this forum is an extremely small sample size of vehicles out there, and people speak up when they have problems but stay silent when things are just fine. Forum members with white paint issues have had a decent rate of success getting Toyota corporate or a dealer to remedy paint issues, even out of warranty.

    21taco.jpg Hi all,

I'm kinda new to the forum. Just bought 2021 sport MT have a couple of questions
    - Adding a tonneau cover, do they remove the cleat rails to install?
    - Thinking about a 3" factor lift, anyone else do this yet?
    - Surprised didn't come with mudflaps, my 2002 SR5 and 2012 TxPro both had them

Will be doing some mods, looking forward to sharing and hearing about others mods. Thanks.

I thought it would never happen to me, but I just noticed a large area of paint chipping/falling off on my 2017 (white). Front driver's side fender, beneath the hood line (sort of internally, facing the engine block) but it's noticeable when looking at it from the front of the truck. Will be reviewing all of the white paint threads and taking a trip to the dealer soon. :(

Here you go. Just do a quick TW search and find the consolidated thread that links about 15 white paint chipping threads and you'll find a ton of info. I'm going to have to take a trip to the dealer asap now that I've found this. I will also say that I've noticed spots all over the hood and roof as well after hand washing the truck recently. Not cool at all.

EDIT: Here's the link for you: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/consolidated-super-white-040-paint-issue-failure-thread.689940/

Your SR gives me hope. Two and one half hours ago my white '16 Sport was rear ended at 45 mph and the kid did not brake. The bed tore from the frame, the frame is bent and the rear dif is leaking. 51k miles and it looked brand new. I'm pretty sure it's totaled so I've been looking for its replacement. What does the SR not have? I would not miss the press button iginition. Is the granite gray interior close to black? The dealers don't even bother to post pictures, they sell so fast. I think the SR has steel wheels so maybe I could get pro wheels. The only Sports I see are $41k. I only paid $34k for mine but I beat them to death for a deal in 2016. What would an SR be missing? Do you have the 120v outlet in the bed? Fog lights? I would not miss the map app.

    RIP.

Sorry to hear about your Sport, and glad you're ok. I'm assuming you mean the SR5 which i have, but is different from the SR. Coming from a Sport to an SR5, I really don't notice much at all. It has fog lights like the Sport, but no bed outlet that the Sport had, but I really never used it. It has the sliding rear window which I really like, and they have added a power driver seat and Apple car play, so I am totally happy with the SR5. As to the gray interior, it isn't close to black, but it is kinda two tone, a lighter cement color with some darker accents on the doors etc. I am really happy with the SR5 and I definitely like the SR5 wheels better than the Sport wheels. Hope this helps. Here is my SR5.

Thanks for the reply. No one actually has an SR5 like yours in stock so that's why I guess I got confused. Your truck looks great. The dealers in NOVA are charging above MSRP for Tacomas and the trucks close to me are either SRs or Sports or Off Roads. I doubt I will be happy with an SR but maybe I could get TRD Pro wheels and some better tires. I spent last night looking and again today and stock has already diminished. It will be about three days before I will get a verdict on whether it's totaled. I ran a Carvana offer on mine and they are offering $32968 assuming it never had an accident. I paid $34k in 2016. I know insurance won't give me nearly that but I'm hoping not to be too much out of pocket. Maybe I'll just have to drive one of the other four Toyotas we have until the 2022s come out. I'm picking up a "big pickup" rental in the morning. So much for going to the beach this weekend.
