Had a call with Toyota USA regarding the truck's condition, past 63K any issue with the truck is on the owner to figure out. They all but told me to pound sand regarding the engine failure. I suppose for me, this will be the last New Toyota I'll be spending cash on. An expiration date of 150K is way too low to justify paying almost $40K for a 3.5L lightweight.

Dealer wants $11K for a used motor swap with 50K miles which is obviously a joke. Next step for me is to eat the diagnostics bill, pull the truck home and swap something in myself.

I know realistically my situation should be a fluke, but with religious servicing of the motor and drivetrain only to get a seized engine at 150,000 is concerning to me. Had I known this would be the case, I would have traded this thing out a long time ago, I just expected a Toyota to last longer than that.

So if y'all are getting up there in miles, I'd maybe trade em in while they're still running for something younger.

I'll pick up the truck tomorrow and start the tear down this weekend.

    Did it suck a valve?

I’ve been thinking about selling mine for an older tacoma or 4runner because of crazy threads like this and other stuff.

Really? This is like 1 out of how many hundreds of thousands 3.5s out there.

Just curious, what’s the other stuff?

I'm sure you're going to catch flack from the apologists/cultists. I'd do a swap with an LQK used engine and punt the POS down the road while the values are high. It's a shitty pill to swallow, but IMO the 3rd gen reminds me a lot of the 1996-2010 Ford F150. The drivetrain is just not up to snuff and a lot people have battered wife syndrome because the rest of it looks good.

Well it's not like he called McDonald's asking why his meal was cold. I'd be livid pissed too if out of the blue my engine shit the bed in such an awesome fashion.

I'm not sure i would have called Toyota because the warranty was over with, but can understand why the OP made the call.

Sorry I didn't even read the NINJA edit quoted text.

I doubt the OP is even interested in diesel swapping it, on a modern vehicle it would be nothing but a cat 5 assache getting stuff like the tach, cruise, transmission etc to work. I guess some people think this is like swapping a 4BT into a 1985 HiLux

I hope OP digs into it himself.

    1. To find the actual issue and enlighten us.
    2. If it needs a rebuild, rebuild it. Would be better than a used one in which you have no idea wtf has gone on with it.

With the way OP maintained it, I bet there is virtually no wear on the bearing surfaces. I'm leaning toward a fluke metal fatigue failure in the cams or timing somewhere. Only issue is if there was piston contact and did it damage the walls. That's really the only thing that would suck. And even then, you could re-sleeve the bad cylinder.

But then again, I like taking shit apart and making it better than new. And yes, I know, that last 10% of making things perfect doubles the budget!

Yeah Ive read about issues with some of the super white trucks. My buddy had a white sport with 35k miles, no issues with the paint.

Why take apart a common as peanut butter 3.5 and have a wild idea about re-sleeving it? It's not like it's rare matching HEMI block to a six figure car

IMO home rebuilds are rarely better than a low mile used, esp if it has trash in the oil galleys. I'd take it apart for fun and toss it into the service drive of Toyota after hours.

I wanted a white one when I bought mine. Ended up with silver and was happy. I have had door sill rust tsb'd, but I still had it good compared to the superwhites. I feel for them.

My wife's rav is the same white and still looks good.

I think it is because Super White is a single stage paint. Heard that it is super thin too.

    Yes, you are correct.

The days of nice thick, oil based paints are long gone. Most modern vehicles have thin water based paints now days. Even the 2 stage paints are super thin, just how it is unfortunately. That’s why IMO ceramic coating followed by a topcoat does wonders.
