Component Speaker Help Please

Hello, I am thinking of replacing the speakers in my 2019 SR X-Cab. I am thinking of using an amp and component speakers but am having trouble finding post about peoples experiences with doing this. Has anyone installed lower priced component speakers ( sub $200 ), and what are your experiences with your system ? Thank you for any help/advice.

 

I can't say how they will sound in a Tacoma but I had the Hertz K170s in my last Tundra and they sounded good. I had them powered by a JBL 5 channel amp and they were in all 4 doors with a JBL sub. The system sounded real good. I am sure some speakers will sound better but I was satisfied with the Hertz and they come in around $120

 

Like 90+% of the people here have done components up front and the only people that complain are the ones that didn’t plan well and failed to meet their own expectations.

 

@dolbytone I am thinking of an amp about 50-60 RMS component speakers up front and maybe coax speakers in the back. I plan on all speakers being from the same brand. Is there anything else that I am missing that I should be considering ? I had a system with a 50 watt amp and JBL speakers and was happy with the volume. I am trying to get a little better sound clarity than I had in the past. I understand that sound is a subjective thing but I am trying to minimize my mistakes. Thank you to anyone for help/time.

 

My humble opinion:

I’ve done both 6.5” and 6x9 components. I prefer 6x9 because typically they will go lower, especially with no subwoofer planned. Try to get a nice large tweeter, like 1” soft dome of some kind, it will sound more natural.

Mounting them properly and doing some kind of door treatment will improve the results.

If you are adding an amplifier, oversize the power wire. It’s inevitable you’ll want more power or a sub of some kind later on so plan for that. You don’t want to rip it all out if you end up going full retard in 3 years and it doesn’t add very much to the budget. Same thing for speaker wire, don’t use 18AWG, use 14 or 16 at least, I prefer 14AWG. From the crossover to the tweeter you can use smaller wire (usually supplied).

(Optional) Get yourself some heat shrink, ferrules, tech flex, weather stripping, etc. It will make for a more professional and durable installation.

If you wanna skip the kiddie pool phase and go straight to fuck a budget, go straight to Mille Pros and the biggest Audio Control DSP amplifier you can manage, get a Foxbox or Mr.Marv, rip out all your rear seat storage plastic and cram some Sundowns in there and feed them the damn onions, like a JL HD1200/1 onions. Then spend the next three years tuning that joker.

can i ask, why coaxials over components? and assuming you got the biggest Audio Control DSP amplifier, couldn't that feed the Sundowns without the HD1200/1?

 

I didn’t mention coaxials at all so IDK why you are asking.

I chose the HD1200/1 because it’s the only trustworthy amp I could find that does 1200W @ 4 Ohms. Everything else gets big power by reducing impedance.
