rotated tires changed oil threw out the old air freshener.
Recreational oil changes are a "thing"

Good intentions fucking it up for everyone , as far as the EPA sees it.

Let's not let emotions and "feelies" control our use of automobiles. There is enough pressure from those that don't know or care.

Still don't see how you can change oil for
$20 for 1st time. Our truck takes more than 6 quarters. So you need 2 jags or very expensive two 1 quart bottles.
Walmart sells oil in 5 qtrs jags for 22-25 (+-tax). Walmart oem filters $6-7+tax.
Your 2nd, 3rd may cost less, but not 1st.
    Don't forget a wrench and washer ..
1st oil change is north of $50

I'm hoping this summer won't be another record breaker like last summer. It was 115 in Phoenix where I'm at, but other sources say we hit a new record of 118. https://www.azcentral.com/story/new...ugh-weekend-smoke-and-haze-remain/7734621002/

If this summer is a repeat of last, I'm strongly considering moving. :bananadead::threadjacked:

I think we hit 118 here in Phx today. That high pressure system just planted its ass over us and sat down. I'm glad i don't work outdoors anymore, tolerating that level of discomfort gets old. To stay on topic..I change my oil everytime i shut my truck off, it gives me peace of mind to start it up with fresh quarts.

They usually go off of Sky Harbors readings which tends to get a few degrees hotter i'm assuming because of the tarmac??

Definitely not. Function checked, sure. But there are many threads here talking about how bad the mpg of the vehicle is only for it to have improved by the end of the 1000 mile break in as mentioned in the owner's manual.

Rings are seated, good to go. Can’t think of anything else that would need a “break in” and/or that would affect mpg. If it takes 1,000 miles to break-in the rings, something is seriously wrong. It is NOT normal for any surfaces or bearings to wear down (I.e., metal shavings) during the first 1,000 miles. Any shavings found in the oil are most likely from the manufacturing process (drilling; tapping; threading; etc).

I believe auto manufacturers still call for the x,xxx break-in for two reasons:
    1) a possible way out of liability.
    2) so if something was assembled wrong/faulty parts, the engine won’t grenade which lowers the price of the repair.

You forgot about the mobil 1 rebates twice a year... Usually its about $10-12 dollars back for every 5qt, so i stock up with a limit of 2 each time, so it costs me approx $10 / 5 quarts. Been doing this with mobil oil for over 5 years

It's your vehicle, change your oil sooner than recommended (and if you plan on keeping it forever...use the best synthetic engine and gear oil you can!), Toyota like other manufacturers would love to sell you another vehicle ASAP!
I change mine every 6000 kilometers or around there give or take 500 kilometers !

I used to agree with this and preformed 3,500 mile oil changes. However, the longitivtiy of oil has gotten significantly better in the past 10 or so years. Various oil analysis’ (owners, private research studies, etc.) have proven that 10k oil changes are fine (heck, technically 12-15k is just fine). I would, however, change the oil at the prescribed timings (6 months, year, etc,) as water contamination does occur which breaks down the oil faster. You usually won’t notice the water contamination either, as it usually gets blown out the crank as steam.

At the end of the day, it’s your truck. No one else can tell you how to treat it. I just don’t believe that we should make statements such as “your engine will not last as long” if you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines. This is simply not true. Heck, look at fleet vehicles. Do you think they change the oil before the recommended intervals?

Not trying to start an argument, but oil has come a long way. And if Toyota purposefully set high intervals to cause premature engine failure, do you really think someone would buy another car from them? Probably not.

While i was grocery shopping a 2016 tacoma owner pulled in parking next to me, and we chatted for awhile how with him asking how i like my truck. Well the oil change interval came up. He's had toyota do all his service at their recommended 10k mile oil changes. Right now his truck has nearly 90k and doesn't burn a drop of oil. Sounds good enough for me.

Buy it? I just stick my hand in the tank behind my local AutoZone. Free oil! It's also a good place to get free hydraulic, gear oil and tranny fluid. Luckily they keep it all in the same tank.

I find it really saves time and money to get it all mixed together.

I don't see a recreational oil change as environmentally damaging as DINKs living in a 3800 sq foot house where they only sleep in one room at a comfortable 68 degrees in Tucson AZ as a TV the size of a sheet of plywood needs to be installed in every room as the pool pumps hums out their favorite song to keep the pool clean that they use four times a year as the kitschy t-shirt they bought for Cinco De Mayo lays in the trash on this hot summer day.

    I can recycle the oil
