Paid $30,000 in 2018 for my ACLB TRD Sport. Have since put on 30k miles to total 60k on the odo. Since then, I have been wishing at times I had the DCSB for gear and people and also the rear locker so I built one with everything I liked (color, model, technology packages etc) and a Toyota dealer ordered for me without me having to sign for it. They would give me $29,000 trade in and the new TRD OR DCSB should be roughly $38,000.

Now the mods I've added that would stay with prices and labor: DB lift + front bumper + 5 premium wheels/ tires = $8100.

If my truck new was $34,500 and the 2GR lasts roughly 250,000 miles then the truck has gone through $8300 of wear and tear.

I'll be able to switch over the skid plates, exhaust, seat covers, sliders etc but anyway it boils down, it would still be $9k up front assuming the dealer doesn't mark it up further.

My question is if money IS an object, is it smart to get into the new truck that I fully want? Or am I just nit picking about the locker, color, and DC? PS: the lift is a drop bracket lift which if you know what that is, you'll know why I don't like it. My skids took a beating.

Get the new truck. But I would explore other avenues for selling your old one and getting a new one. Most people have been getting extremely strong offers from vroom, carvana, local dealerships.

I will say this. I got my 21 OR new with led lights for 35,500 without taxes and fees. So deals can be had.

What?? Toyota is pricing those at $39k on their site. I guess the market is (slowly) going back to normal

My msrp was like 40,675 or something

But Toyotas don't usually discount well. But the dealership is number one volume dealer so they can take hits on some vehicles. If you're willing to drive to Colorado. I can get you setup with the manager. But just know I can't promise that same deal

You’re nitpicking. The perfect truck doesn’t exist. Even if it does, it’s only for a fleeting moment, then your needs will change or you will want newer shinier things. Drive your cool truck and enjoy what you have. 38-29k = 9k spent that you didn’t need to spend. That’s a a lot of money in my book.

I wondered if anyone on here would take that route.. yeah that's what I was thinking, that there will always be new and shinier things and I'm just bring greedy. Thanks for speaking up

I have a DCSB and am not impressed with the space in the rear seat. Four adults are a tight fit. My GF’s teen fits back there but on longer trips generally stretches out sideways.

I four-wheel my truck frequently but have yet to use the rear locker other than to play with it. It is nice to know I have it if I need it, but remember it turns it’s self off if you drive faster than 5 MPH.

If you’re looking to upgrade for a larger rear seat, I would look to something other than a Taco.

I think for many of us it's more OCD than greed. When you bought this truck, was it everything you wanted at that time? Do you see yourself lusting after the newest features on the trucks in three or four years? If so, you might try to stifle the upgrade urge.

That's where I get mad at myself because what I want now was available 3 years ago, I just didn't know it like the double cab and rear locker. I don't want all the nannies they keep coming out with like bsm, lane assist etc so that's my Hang up

Take this for what it's worth from a guy who is typically not a fan of all the electronic 'nannies' but I'm not bothered by the Tech which the '20+ Taco's have. Adaptive Cruise Control has made me a believer and makes it so that I rarely use the non-adaptive Cruise Control on my other vehicles, plus the Taco has the ability to switch to non-adaptive Cruise Control if you want. I like the Blind Spot Monitor. Lane-keep assist can get annoying (especially when I'm in the mountains) but is easily turned-off. The LED headlights are hands-down the best headlights I've ever had on a car. The Nav is so good that it shows many of the Forest Roads I like to explore. Some people say there is advanced data collection on the '20+ but that's not a new thing for automakers; If Toyota wants to track me to know that every Sunday afternoon I take my Fam to the local Hot Dog stand, so be it.

For me the newer Tech has really made my Taco a lot more useful. Now if five years from now all that Tech starts breaking-down then that will be another story.

    OP,

I really like these kinds of discussions because they go to the heart of why people come here -- to get and shape the truck that best meets your needs!

I will say this. Having had an AC (2005) for many years, I upgraded to the DC (2020 / TRD OR) and love it. It makes a world of difference. Don't get me wrong, I loved my AC and that truck. It was great for many years but the kid got bigger, the wife added a dog, then another dog and it was cramped. Does the DC have the perfect amount of space? No. But it is a lot better. In fact, I am probably like you -- I could use a bit more space and, not going to lie, I have my eye on the new Tundra. Or, at least I am curious to see what it is like when the re-design comes out. Probably won't get one but I will sit in it and see if there is a huge difference. The older you get, the more comfort you desire. :)

In your case, I would say the following. The AC to DC is not nitpicking. It is a big difference. Especially if you want to throw two buddies back there and take a road trip. I would need to see the gap on the trade in versus the new truck. But if you are at about $9K to me that is a no brainer. Finance for a long time and then just pay off right away or at a much faster pace.

If I was in your shoes -- and I am clearly not -- jumping now and upgrading for under $10K, I would totally do it.

Good luck ! Please post back here what you decide. I am always curious how these kinds of discussions take place and what the final decision ends up being.

    :)

It's not the usefulness of the nannies that make me hate them, it's the reliability. Mechanical always out lasts electrical and I want to take my trucks to 200,000k+ miles. But the one I built, although it is a 2021, didn't have a technology package so it's the cheapest I can get and the most mechanical. I mean if it were up to me, I'd build a 90s Tacoma just bigger because things like the 4wd actuator were actually mechanical instead of our little knobs but the past is gone

That's ultimately why I bought my AC because I didn't need the room, I think AC looks the best, and I got it for a great deal. But as I start taking longer trips west or take more people out for drinks, the AC starts to get cramped for people and gear. And having to ratchet strap the gear in the bed everytime is exhausting. I appreciate your feedback, I felt like a brand new vehicle for under $10k was a no brainer also but my wife is pissed I even considered it. I love my truck, I just think a DC plus my new knowledge of modding these things can make for the dream truck.

All depends on the dealer. Toyota priced the truck online at $37,500 but if the dealer puts it anywhere past that $39,000 mark then it's no deal. It comes in middle of September so I'll be sure to update this thread when the time comes. Market could be totally different so we shall see. Thanks again for the input.

I can see your point, however on the other side today's electronics are a lot more reliable than they were in year's past and, if properly diagnosed can be easier to repair. It's like having OBD2 vs OBD1 (or no OBD at all). Personally I like being able to plug my code reader into my truck and seeing what the problem is and knowing which part I (likely) need to replace. Most recently I did that a year ago when my Silverado threw a CEL and I was able to see which one of the four O2 Sensor's needed to be replaced. My '93 Toyota T100, which also needs a replacement O2 Sensor does not have advanced diagnostics like that so it likely will be getting all of it's O2's sensors replaced.

All that aside though, if you plan on carrying passengers in the rear seat of your Taco on more than a regular basis you may be wise to look at something else, or take the people you normally haul around on an extended test drive first. In my household we have one 15 y/o boy who is a little smaller build than most and he gets uncomfortable on long trips back there. If I had two Teens I wouldn't want to do it and even with the one we often take my crew cab Silverado on longer trips just because the rear seat is so much larger in that truck.

My last gripe about the rear seat in the DCSB Taco: When the rear seat is in the upright position there is no gap between the rear of the seat and the rear bulkhead which makes it impossible to stow long items like a rifle. Might not be a concern for some but has hastened my plans to add a shell to my truck, or it may get traded on a new Tundra.

What’s $9000 to you……a lot, a little……do you have other needs for the money……what could you do with $9000 and keeping your old truck……

my Taco is 2010, third vehicle…..all three are Paid For……..(just a different viewpoint).

what is it that you want………turn down the noise from the dealer…..

I understand. I have a manual so my seat has to be in a specific place so my feet fit on all 3 pedals otherwise it's hard to drive so that already takes the seat behind mine out of the question. So anything more than 2 people and it just can't happen. I don't haul more than one person regularly but it's the every-now-and-then people that kill me and we have to squish in.
And I also get it's easier to diagnose electronic problems nowadays, I'd just rather not have them in the first place lol hard to break a BSM sensor if it's not there

Well it's in the middle right now. I'm actually getting stationed at an army base soon so I'll be in cheap (ish) housing, renting, for the next 5 years until I'll look at houses and land plus it's a pretty money-dependable job so it's obviously a lot of money but it's sits in the middle which is why I have the conundrum.
Dealer aside, it's hard to pass up a new 0 mile vehicle for $9k when mine has 60k miles. It just resets the counter is all

In the world of guitars, stock instruments sell and mods drop the resale value dramatically. Not sure if that's the same with trucks, but if it's not, then sell your current truck on your own (I just got $4k more for my Subaru selling it privately than I have been offered by the Toyota dealer at trade-in, the Subaru dealership for a straight sale to them, Carvana, KBB, etc.) If you modded your truck and sold all the OEM equipment, then that should be factored into this math as well since you can't revert to stock (if that would help the resale value).

Anyway, only losing $1k on a few-year-old trade-in is a damn good deal, and it sounds like the new truck would be just what you want.

My next question will ruffle some feathers here, so there's your warning... Why do you need to add $8k in a lift, bumper, and wheels/tires? Will the new truck not operate with the stock wheels, bumper, and suspension? You may find you enjoy the ride on the stock vehicle better, and you won't feel the need to spend all that extra money! If you can live without the rear locker, I'd say get an SR5 and mod that.

Of course, if this is a daily driver and an overlander then everything I just said is useless. :) The world of guitars is generally much less expensive than that of vehicles, so I'm likely way off base and get sticker shock with the numbers people talk about on here
