Yup, they make up for it on volume and the fact that police and parts drivers (just to name a couple) will put more miles on them than someone like myself who does 10-15K a year so they need replacing more often than mine.

My phone experience was pretty shitty with most places too. A lot of places were all hype to sell me just about anything on their lot, completely sidestepping my desire for a manual. "We got a fully loaded Limited in Midnight Black! It looks so great with the custom wheels and fender flares we put on it, the blackout badges and the adds we put on, come by and check it out! (I live 200 miles away, but thanks) It's only $54k after all the shit we did! If only blank stares translated over the phone in something other than me laughing hysterically and then hanging up.

Most places, once it became clear I was going to be picky about my wants and wouldn't "settle" for something off the lot, basically just said "we got what we got, if you don't want what we're selling go somewhere else, we're not gonna order anything for you." Or just stopped talking to me altogether. Fair enough, I guess. I'll take my cash elsewhere. And I did.

Common upgrade. The motor controls the wipers movement, the switch controls the motor. Better switch, more control. Think of it like a ceiling light, simple on/off swich or a dimmer switch...but it's still the same light bulb.

Please stop paying more MSRP, it’s a scam that encourages these ugly tactics that makes things worse for those who are vulnerable and likely to fall into financial debts.

Paying more than MSRP isn't what upsets the balance of normal commerce, it's that there is an MSRP to begin with. The blind acceptance of MSRP as the cornerstone of bargaining puts the buyer at a disadvantage.

MSRP is actually the price the manufacturer and dealer have determined is where they start to feel guilty about ass raping you. MSRP is built off another mythical price; Dealer Invoice, which is not the price the dealer pays for the vehicle.

Dealer markup over MSRP simply adds another layer of confusion to obscure them sticking it in your ass, the only difference is that most people today don't even know they got fucked twice allready.

It's all an illusion, the fact is the price represents what the market will pay.

Might work for you but most people don't buy 3 trucks in less than 5 years especially Toyota's as they last longer than most and that is why they buy Toyota's in the first place. I can't even remember the salesman who sold me mine as I plan to keep it at least 10 years or more.

That is the very reason why dealerships exist.....to put the buyer at a disadvantage and make you part with as much money as possible by any means necessary (honest, borderline, or totally dishonest). Some are more up front about how they are screwing you than others, but make no mistake, they are all out to screw you. If every time you talk to anyone at a dealership you keep in mind that that's their purpose in life and deal with them on that level, you will negate just a little bit of their advantage. The trick is to get to the point where you can live with the amount of screwing that you're getting. That's when deals happen.

    Uhhh, No.
A dealership exists as a retail/service outlet for a manufactured product. The marketing system that has developed over decades is a finely tuned program what uses many nuances and trickery to exaggerate the average person's perception of the value of the product. The entire method is to instill an over inflated value of the product. It's actaully fascinating how well it works and how fucking clueless the general public is to this scheme.

Case in point the Ford F150 is basically a heavy duty car with a bed, but Ford can sell it with a few extremely over priced options for substantially more than the F650. All day, everyday.

Sounds like we are saying the same thing in two different ways. My undergraduate degree is in marketing so I get what you are saying, but the end result of the nuances, trickery, and exaggerated perception of value is that the buyer at the dealership level gets unnecessarily screwed because, as you say, they are not aware. And the dealer's purpose in life, as with any other retail outlet, is to maximize their margins.

It's very troubling that Toyota allow dealers to increase the MSRP by adding whatever extra surcharges they want.

I have heard manufacturers are not allowed but it’s probably not being enforced.

It sounds more like dealers are charging exorbitant prices for addons that should only cost a fraction of that if they were done at the factory. $1000 for running boards, $750 for tint. And people are paying because they likely didn't do any research before they went to the lot, they aren't willing to wait (that need for instant gratification overriding the "i'm being ripped off" spider sense), and it's happening across the board, not just at the Toyota dealership. People are paying $50-60k for similarly spec'd Rangers, Colorados, Frontiers, and Gladiators.

Good for you. Most dealers here are not doing Toyota family discounts at this time. Those who do, do not take them on Tacomas. Corollas, yes, but not Tacomas.

I'm glad I got the deal I did back when I bought mine in 2018. There were like 8 to choose from on the lot, got the color I wanted, etc. I did pay extra for the dealer add ons, (OEM bed mat, tonneau, mud flaps, and floor mats), but honestly those are all items I'm glad I got at purchase. The dealer even knocked the price down, basically to compensate for the add-ons. In the end I feel I could have probably done slightly better on the deal, but all in all I'm happy, especially hearing these stories now. Btw, my kbb says my truck is worth 5k more for trade than what I paid new... so there's that

Dealers can charge what they like. I really don't have an issue with that. The market will dictate what they can charge. If people don't buy their inventory with add on mark ups, they will be faced with inventory they need to move. Just walk away from these inflated prices.

People in this thread are bringing up "supply and demand", but there is a difference between that and a dealership acting scummy.

And like all scumbags they lose in the end. You can't treat people like shit and expect to keep um' coming back. Even though Toyota "people" are generally pretty brand loyal, there are options. Many more options today than 5 years ago.
