Hey everybody, new member of the group and recent owner of my first truck. 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road.
Just wondering if I should be using premium gas instead of 87 regular. Thanks for any feedback !

No. That is covered in your owners manual and I think it's even labelled on the gas cap.

It won't hurt anything it's just a waste of money vs 87.

The only time premium makes sense is if you have a tune that will take advantage of it. I run 91 but also have an octane learning tune that makes use of it to a degree. Stock - just use 87. Topic has been beaten to death over here.

Not unless it's specifically tuned for it. It won't hurt anything, it's just a waste of money.

If you've modded to 11.5 compression or better, sure. Otherwise, nope.

I use higher octanes if they don’t have ethanol. If 87 without ethanol is available I use that. But that’s rare. I like to avoid fuel with ethanol for many of my own reasons. I recommend higher octane/ethanol free if the trucks not being driven often.

What are your reasons for avoiding ethanol? I get if you had an older car/engine, or if it regularly sits in storage for months on end, but modern engines are built to run with an ethanol mixture without issue...

The engine is designed to operate properly with 87octane minimum. I doubt using premium will benefit enough to justify the significant higher cost, or at least it does not do it for me. I would try a different brand is performance is lacking.

    It's a secret
Yes. And every time you're at a full stop light or intersection, don't bother keeping your foot on the brake pedal once stopped...you can instead engage the Parking Brake/Hand Brake.

All, please remember that Octane is not a "power" adder.

Its sole purpose is to help prevent pre-detonation or "ping". Today's engines are controlled to adjust the timing to an extent to avoid the pre-detonation.

Really, there is no need for a higher octane.

    Do you have a supercharger?
    Does it knock?
Do you want to subsidize gas companies who make a killing from people who don’t research how octane works?

If either or both of the first two questions are yes, than super may be an option.
If only the third answer is yes, let me give you my Venmo account and you can send me your wasted money.

You don't have to but it won't hurt. Had to mix premium gas in with my normal gas when filling up in Taylor Park Reservoir but had no issues.
