Worth it?

Hello,

I’m looking at buying a used Tacoma and found a nice 2018 TRD OR with 33k miles on. Leather seats and tech package. The dealer will do $36,900 before tax. It’s in great condition and clean title.

It appears to be a decent deal but was wondering if I could get some insight from you guys as you are the Tacoma pros.

I wouldn't buy anything right now if I could help it. My 2019 sport was 34500 new. I can't believe prices will stay that inflated but who knows. The entire economy doesn't make sense right now. Everything from real estate to trade to stocks to commodities to inflation to whatever else is flipped on it's head

 

I haven’t been staying too current on the used prices, but from what I’ve seen that looks like a fair deal. Dealer offered me more than I paid new for my 19. It is pretty crazy, but Tacomas have always held value well. Best thing to do is decide if you want to get the truck now, and compare to what you are seeing at other dealers in your area.

I've seen similar trucks advertised for more than that recently.
Don't seem like a terrible bad deal considering the times.

 

I think if that dealer would sell it as a certified used then that would even sweeten the deal. Give you a little more piece of mind with additional warranty.

 

not worth buying used, in 2-3 years once 4th gen Tacomas are out, buying it at today's price will lead to a huge negative equity once the market normalizes

If it’s 4WD, that’s a fair/good price in TODAY’S market.
And today’s market is stupidly inflated IMO. I wouldn’t buy a truck now unless I had to.
(Or found a really good deal)

 

My buddy just paid 40k otd for a 2019 dcsb tech package 4x4 with 30k miles. So id say thats pretty good

 

The Market is wacky. I bought a 2020 v6 SR5 4x4 in July 2020. $33600 plus tax and fees. $14k down. Refinanced with the credit union about a month ago to get a rate about 1.5% off TFS's. The loan officer gave me an NADA report with the then current retail value of $43,600!
Mine had about 8000 miles but she put 22,000 on the report.
Vehicles are supposed to normally depreciate some even the Tacoma that holds value generally well. What is happening now is crazy and you will not likely see it again in our lifetime. The economy is really messed up.

Market is definitely out of whack. Same truck here in SF bay area would sell for over $40k. It's definitely is a seller's market for at least the next 3-4 months. Once they restore chip production and rental car companies refill their fleets, vehicle market will normalize and prices will come down. When dealers will get flooded with huge new inventory that is right now sitting chip-less on manufacture's lots, there'll be plenty of sweet dealt to be had. Until then, hang tight or bite the bullet

The market definitely went too wacky too fast and it's going to return just as fast. When that happens, it's going to leave a lot of buyers with a sour taste for the deals they took.
If I were in the market but could get by with what I have right now. I'd wait a few months.

 

I’m not entirely convinced the market will “come back down”. If dealers are seeing that people are still willing to pay these inflated prices. Why would they ever sell for less?

 

I bought my 2021 TRD Sport DCLB (auto) in May new for $37,600 with the tech package and upgraded audio with nav. About $2k under MSRP. I ran it through KBB yesterday and the trade-in value is $3k more than what I paid for it. Private party sale is like $5k more. First time in my life I've had a vehicle appreciate after it left the dealership. I'm used to them depreciating about 20% when you put 4 tires on the street for the first time. I know this truck is known for its resale value, but damn lol.

The problem with trying to wait this out is who knows when things will return to "normal", if ever. The demand curve for this truck seems to be pretty inelastic, so it make take a bit longer than most to settle once the supply chain is fixed and inventories gets back to normal levels. To the OP, that price doesn't seem unreasonable in today's world. You will have to decide whether you need it now or can try to wait it out.

 

It will be awhile I'm afraid. Right now we are looking to first quarter 2023 before supply even starts to catch up with demand... on pretty much anything. This is not a 1-2 month thing. If you like the deal, get it or somebody else will.
