4.56 vs 4.88 Gears

    4.56 would bring power back and you'll have lower highway rpm's than 4.88's

    I was considering over gearing to 4.88s until Chris4x4 mentioned something that I had overlooked. With gears that steep, the pinion is going to be tiny and the ring teeth are going to be necessarily thin. Thinner gears generally mean less strength.

    Something to consider if you wheel hard.

    I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
    Yeah when i re-gear I'm going with 4.56 I don't want to be at 3500rpms at 75 with the 4.88

    True the teeth are smaller, but there are also more contact points and you really do not loose strength.

    When talking about re-gear, you have to look at your purpose for doing so. If you are staying on the street you might want to have 4.56 for your 35" tires. If you are going to be doing any kind of wheeling you may strongly want to consider 4.88 to give you more slow control over obstacles.

    Overall, 4.56 vs. 4.88 is a pretty small difference. And you didn't tell us what size tires you're running.

    4.10 gears, sliders, and lots of buttons.
    Correct about the contact points. The 4.56 ring gears has 41 teeth, while the 4.88 has 39. More importantly, The 4.88 uses an 8 tooth pinion, vs. the 9 tooth pinion for the 4.56. Therefor, the 4.56 is the stronger of the 2, as there is more engauged surface area, and (by haveing a little larger pinion gear), less chance for damage due to shock loading of the diff.

    so what is the reason in the east coast gear supply it say 4.56 thick? Does that mean the gear is casted from strong steel?

    The 4.56 gears are available in a thick cut gear to allow you to retain your factory 3.73
