The person likely buys FCA products.

I disagree. It is a lot of miles . The fact that you can do that many miles in 4-5 years is irrelevant. Do I think a motor can go longer yes. Should it last longer yes. But in the end it is a machine with moving parts. There are so many things that could happen.
Something as simple as a foreign object going into the intake could take a motor out. A piece of a ring could crack off, a valve could drop out . Valve retainers could fail . On and on .
Find out what’s really wrong and go from there .

And no I don’t buy FCA products. I’ve owned 3 Tacoma’s and 2 Nissan Frontiers and they have all been very good.
    2000 Tacoma traded at 120 k miles
    2004 Tacoma trades at 180 K miles
    2005 4 Runner 235 k miles still in family

Dude what? Google average American miles per year and you'll get your answer. Seems so closed minded.

My mom drove 60,000 a year for 33 year and until she bought a Prius in 2006 she had never kept a car longer than 4 years because she was buying American crap but… that Prius only lasted 380k miles. I expect more I hope you all do too. I’ve bought three other manufacturers than Toyota in the last five years because the lack of Toyota innovation and long term reliability. Subaru has been great other than having the battery die under warranty and the Fords I haven’t had to do anything other than change the oil…

Average mileage for an American is about 15k a year but that doesn't necessarily mean much, highway mileage should be easier on a car than lots of short stops hauling shit around.

This. My Miata has 120k on the clock and it’s over 22 years old. I assume that some have commuter cars and only use the truck to haul or they have shorter commutes. There are a lot of factors to consider but I think engine hours is the best measurement. Mileage doesn’t necessarily track engine use/wear.

I agree about engine hours. I really wish vehicles had an engine hours meter like a lot of power equipment has. I wonder if it’s stored in the ECU and accessible…

The 4.0 seems a lot more durable if this happens more often

    Yeah.
They're all in the same GR family of engines, just slight differences in displacement, fuel injection, and valve timing. The platform is used across a very wide range of vehicles.

    All of them.
On the engine or in general? In general I can see that because all the transmission shifting issues people have and the rear diff leak. Haven't heard of any recalls on the engine itself yet tho

    Check build thread!
I mean my ecoboost exploded at 110k km, so I mean, been there done that I suppose . All jokes aside, I got an offer for 4k (cad) more than I payed for my truck. Might take it. So this might actually come true.

    Yeah.
Ah, just trolling, I get it now.

I'm still in on finding out what the failure was. Those hood vents and snorkel have me thinking he boosted the crap out of it with a chrome hair dryer and some NOS.

This seems like a common thing, apparently.

I don't think anything is wrong with the Tacoma engine or transmission. It's pretty much like every other Japanese motor I have owned, it likes to rev high. Maybe not the best for a truck, but if that's all you're used to I'd understand the dislike. My Miata sits at 4-5k rpm on the interstate (70-80 mph) in final gear.
