What's with dealerships screwing up, just last week the dealer here in Chesapeake forgot to change the filter when I took my truck in for an oil change.

GREAT ADVICE. HAVE SIGNS MADE AND ATTACH TO SIDE OF TRUCK.
I WOULD HAVE REVVED IT UNTIL IT BLEW AND THEN CALLED THE NEWSPAPER AND THEN THE DEALER TO COME PICK UP THE PIECES..

x2. They most likely have cameras in their service bay, I would ask them, or demand, a copy of the tape from that day to show that the tech indeed forgot to put oil in the truck. They've most likely deleted the tapes, but it's worth a shot anyway.

They have already admitted it happened it's just a matter of what they will do for me now. The free oil change offered is an insult. I will do the oil myself from now on like I usually do for my other Car. It was really cold that week and I decided it was worth the 50 bucks for them to change it. I was wrong.

Not sure you'd call it 'close' to true, but many mfr's do look at lot more than just miles since last change. They look at data like average air and/or oil temp and average trip duration and speed. They could even look at data like engine load and throttle position, depending on how sophisticated they want to be about it. From that data they can infer an awful lot about oil condition but, as you say, no direct analysis of oil qualities.

So we can't run with zero oil pressure...that could explain why he got a kilometer before the lamp illuminated I think.

Ok so today they offered me an inspection including oil pan and valve cover removal which I can get done by any toyota dealership and even watch or bring someone to watch them do it. I can also take pictures. The question I have is will this inspection be thorough enough to determine damage?

So no mention of an extended engine warrenty to cover this mistake? If it were me I'd be contacting a lawyer and the local news.

unless u know what ur looking at i wouldnt agree to it because they can say it looks fine and who would know the difference.... i think the extended engine warranty is the way to go.

This is the most realistic option in this thread. If the engine is currently running fine they're unlikely to replace it. If you'll get anything out of the dealer, the extended warranty is what you want.

You also want that oil filter that is on there cut opened and checked. Could be a pound of metal in there now.

They would have to pull the bearings off the crank to see damage.

You could have spots though you will never see like the cam shaft, lifters and the Cylinder walls.

I'd say fuck you, you fucked up. Change the damn engine if you want to take it apart well you own that engine now anyway.

I'd still be insisting that it be changed out. It's BS they are not changing it out. I got mine changed when a similar dealer screwup occured. They didn't forget the oil but they did screw up and took the engine out.

First: who is making this offer...the dealership or Toyota?

Second: Has your Toyota warranty been compromised in any way.

    My thoughts:

Probably the only way to ID damage would be to pull a couple main bearing caps.

What are the pass/fail criteria? What are they willing to do if you don't like what you see when it's opened? Do you know what serious scoring on a cam lobe looks like vs. what is just fine?

I think you could bet they will say it's just fine while if they had it open on your nickle it would be all "oh yes...you need replace the cams".

If after looking at the engine and they are still confident the engine is OK then they should be comfortable giving you an extended warranty.

An oil analysis would identify presence of wear metals in quantities not appropriate for the miles on the engine and oil. I think that would suggest something if found. It's a hell of a lot less subjective.

Unless it's absolutely necessary, I hate the idea of any shop opening up my engine ...much less these guys.

demand the extended warranty, or get an attorney and change the engine....they're gonna give u the runaround...they cant hide the fact that the oil pressure light came on..

If I paid for an oil change and they didn't put oil in my truck and then offered me a free oil change, I'd probably be knocking some teeth out. Thats a major fuck up they're trying to fix with one of the cheapest things they can possibly do.

Get an attorney. Get them to make it right or go public. I'm sure the dealer would change their attitude quickly if they thought word about such a massive fuck up was about to become public. Inexcusable.
