That's the combined wheels + tires price from what I understand. 305 70 16 Falkens.

One note I remember from speaking to Tibus, the portal gear boxes also take off stress from the differential, there was some math he showed me but it was too complicated for me to understand, but in short, using the portal axles take stress off the factory diffs.

I believe it essentially gears down so you are getting the most torque at the wheel. A crawl box does this as well but it adds torque through the drivetrain which isn’t good for longevity. So the drivetrain with a portal may be straining for 31’s let’s say, but the torque delivered at the wheel is sufficient enough for 37’s. Great tech but the price tag….

@Windigo When you were looking into lower ball joints and what RockAuto had to offer, did you come up with any key conclusions? And upper ball joints too perhaps?

I’m planning some suspension work (keeping stock-ish) since I’ve got 160,000km and am assuming I’m on borrowed time now.

Maybe: Bilstein 4600 or 5100 all around, rear bunps, maybe an AAL or airbags since I tend to overload the truck. Front will prolly need ball joints too.

I have seen guys out in BC build rigs using Nissan 300ZX TT (9.5”) rear independent diffs and Humvee portal knuckles with custom long travel arms for snow wheeling. They usually run 44” bloggers with sipes cut into the lugs for more traction. This setup gains you something crazy like 36” of clearance down the middle of the rig.

I’ve used successfully TRW brand ball joints and they are doing so far so good on my lowers. Stay away from moog, they don’t last.

Thanks for the TRW shoutout. I wasn’t sure if the upper/lower BJ were even replaceable (on their own) since Toyota replaced the entire LCA when my LBJ had a little play under warranty.

I put MOOG into the First Gen 4Runner and regret it after 5,000 kms of touring. Wasn’t planning on making that mistake twice.

That would explain the different coloured rear door in the first picture.

I guess it wasnt written off either so thats a decent sign. I looked at it on the lot a couple days ago, the frame is kinda rusty and leafs are shot. Might be able to get a new frame out of it, and have them throw some parts on while they do it.

Oh tailgate doesnt close either lol
