What is the proper torque? Thx

 

I believe it's still 18 ft-lbs which is not a lot but there are 10 bolts that provide that clamping force. Those that went good bit above that paid the ultimate price of snapping the stud off.

Wouldn’t think this kind of thing would happen on a new vehicle. I’ll definitely keep an eye on mine.

I'm not sure what the issue ended up being that they issued the tsb and actually had to hold customer's trucks until there was a remedy (per some of the older posts). Wonder if they switched to a gasket that seeped vs leaked and called it good enough.

Anyway, if this is a pretty standard behavior, no problem. I'll monitor it after the dealer visit and if it pisses me off enough, I'll open it up down the road and rtv/loctite the nuts before torquing.

 

It depends on you diff and fastener. See info below. But just as important use proper tightening sequence as outline in doc.

It's not exactly standard, but fasteners can get loose or torque tool can get out of calibration, or may need resetting after different model run on assembly line, but who knows why chit really happens, it just does to everyone at some point.

And it's not a simple loosen and apply rtv sealant on this type diff. Axles, rear brake plates etc. and seals need to be replaced (after axle removal). Luckily, a simple re-torque in the proper sequence and clean up should solve the issue for most all that get affected if addressed in a timely matter.

 

That's great, thx for that. I have the 2020 so the 28 ft-lb torque. Would never have known. Just got the vehicle yesterday so will check today! There are some light oil stains on the diff. Cheers D

 

Word from tech is: no leak, no fix, monitor at service (as expected). I'll probably run a torque wrench over the bolts myself and just monitor going forward. Again, not overly concerned but might as well document it with "the man" if it develops into something more exciting.

 

Thanks for the update. Bringing in mine tomorrow, along with the 10K service. I suspect the outcome will be the same.

 

Chinese Steel is known to be cut with and have very high levels of impurities and contaminants.

 

IF you want this fixed today, get yourself some gear oil and spray it on those area's and have it run down the diff so it looks real wet.. They will fix it then.. But with that being said those area's are just seepage. Personally I would hold off.

Same here. Not that desperate to have them tear into it only to potentially make it worse. I'm documenting mine because I have a lifetime drivetrain warranty from the dealer, which for what it's worth, necessitates bringing up concerns like this.

Like many others, I choose to do my own maintenance but for larger things down the road, have no problem making them fix under warranty.

 

My 2020 DCTRDOR has a few light weeping stains in it. Checked all the bolts I could easily get to (most of them), all at 28 ft- lbs!

 

A quick update about my service visit today: of a few possible outcomes, I think this was not the worst possible scenario. Service advisor said they took photos and referred the issue to Toyota. She indicated that this was borderline leak vs. "normal seepage" and wanted to make sure this was documented before doing anything (or not doing anything) to it. That was my main goal all along, to have this documented by a local shop, escalate it to Toyota, and then go from there.

 

Update: 15 July 21
After the 2nd dealer visit, following dealer "consultation" with Toyota, it was determined that it was "normal"
They checked the torque and cleaned up.
The "seep" is back. Miles=10,309 (2021 TRD Pro)

 

Just noticed this tonight on my 21 TRD OR. Having read everything, I suppose I’ll bring it up at the next service to get it documented, but trying not to get too stressed. (Definitely annoyed.) The good thing is that no one has complained about how this has blown into an actual huge problem. Unless that HAS happened and gotten them fixed only under NDAs? Surely that wouldn’t happen, right? (Real question.)
