And while in the area, may as well take advantage and do some trout fishing, too, right?

Was a brook trout short of the slam on this day, but what a day it was. A couple of solid, leopard spotted browns, plenty of colored up bows, and a cutthroat kicker.

This hen was really hungry…had an extra fly in her mouth when landed.

Awesome time, and yes, lots of good trout fishing on the White River system tailwaters, as well as some spring fed streams. Those fish all came from the Norfork River.

The diversity of available fisheries in that area is pretty special.

Haven’t fly fished since I was a kid 20(!) years ago - just picked up a Redington kit and looking forward to get some water time. Anyone here do any stream fishing in socal?

Love the Norfork. Never get to wade as far as I really want to though. Wish I could explore more of it. Being alone or having a kid with me both keep me closer to the easy walking (& quick exit) spots when I've been.

the white is famous for its browns, and the former world record came from the Norfork at over 44 lbs.

Did you take part in Dally’s all species odyssey?

I love heading to cotter/Mountain Home. I’ll probably be out there again in early fall.

    Happy Father’s Day fellas.

No, we were a week early for the Odyssey, but may try and do it next year. Sounds like a good time.

Headed back over there in late August for the White hopper bite, and then an annual float/wade trip with a group of friends on the Norfork in late October. Good times!

Nah. When we fish at night we throw plugs most of the time. We have 3 people in a 14’ Jon boat...throwing flies (especially bigger streamers or mice) can get dangerous  We used to go out twice a year. Now we’re just typically taking one trip a year. I’d love to move out there.

I went to a local small lake this evening with 1 of my kids. Saw handful of other dads with kids. Great day for it here.
Nothing was working so didnt take long for her to be done fishing. Only had spinning reel but did have fly box in truck so figured what the heck. I caught 2 fish fairly quick using fly. Daughter loved seeing fish up close even if she didn't catch them so it's a win.

I still don't know proper names of all the flies yet but I happened to have one that looked a lot like the red dragonflies that were buzzing all over the banks and it worked. Fly on a 20" leader below a weight and jigged it along. (guess I wasn't really "fly fishing" but it was a fly and it got fish :)) Both fish bit as it dropped after a few bounces.
So my daughter learned a new method this trip.

Just read the first post. Ive been a "bait chucker" with my spinning reel forever. But ive recently wanted to learn to fly fish. Just figuring out where to do it.

I'm not a professional or a great fly guy compared to some others posted here. My only advice is what I was given when I bought my first fly rod. LEAVE YOUR SPIN ROD AT HOME. Practice casting. A day on the water without any fish is still a good day on the water. I neglected that advice and took my spinning rod anyway on most trips and when I wasn't catching fish on my fly rod I went back to my basics on my spinner and was crushing them. Made me not want to pick up the fly rod again that day. I didn't progress in my casting abilities until I left my spin rod at home and forced myself to learn how to cast. Its all the same kind of fishing. If you know how to read the water its all the same just a different presentation.
