I’ve been fly fishing for years now but several years ago I took the Orvis 101 class for fly fishing (because they used to or might still give a coupon book at the end) and even though I had been fishing for years, the class was still useful so I would highly suggest taking their classes if possible. They have multiple classes as well!

Was able to go float and fish the Henry’s fork for the first time. Didn’t land too many but had a lot of action with some good green and brown drake hatches. Caught one of the biggest browns of my life on a chubby and landed him after just over a 10 minute fight that my arm is still sore from. Great trip though and the fish fight like crazy up there!

Orvis local to you is a great place to start , remember good gear doesn’t have to be super expensive. A lesson or two can be invaluable.

U should check this book out it’s a great overview https://www.henrysforkanglers.com/store/product/detail/the-curtis-creek-manifesto

When you’re ready to chase some trout you’re an easy day’s drive to a lot of good fisheries in Michigan, Pa, NY Canada WV etc :)

I bet there’s some awesome bass fishing in your area too in addition to the lake run behemoths

Like that rig, and bet that’s a great time.

Looks like I’ll be in Kohler around middle of August. Sure that will be too early for any lake run fish, but any other opportunities around there that time of year?

I wish I would have spent a little more time throwing poppers for smallies when I lived by TMI. Buzz baits always produced for me in the summer though.

The Sheboygan River has decent smallmouth, and some pike in the summer months. If you're not familiar with the area, there's a huge hunk of private land through Kohler that limits access to the river to only a few spots unless you're one of the privileged ones. So upstream around Sheboygan Falls and below the Interstate are your best bets. There's also some trout streams in the western part of the county that I'm not familiar with. Sheboygan has a great flyshop called Aventuron and they're also wonderful Toyota folks. Check them out when you're in Kohler.

Thanks for the info. Will be there for a work thing/industry meeting…don’t regard myself as privileged, but may have some access that I wouldn’t otherwise. Will have to look into that further. While others are swinging golf clubs maybe I can get some time on the water. Will definitely check out that shop. Thanks

Didn’t have any luck in Charleston this weekend, so I had to come back home and remind myself I know how to fish. Hi everybody! New to TW, and glad to see there is a fly fishing thread. I've been fly fishing for way too long, and tying for about 6 years now. Fishing all around upstate NY. I'll throw a fly at anythign that swims, but swinging streamers for steelhead (lake run rainbows for the PNW purists) is my favorite. Water is real warm here right now, so I've been doing quite a bit of warmwater fishing/tying. Still trying to get my first carp.

Anyone have a good solution or DIY for carrying rods in the bed without them sliding around? I'm thinking just some rope or bungee strung up between the rail cleats, front and back, which would allow me to keep my tonneau closed as well. Might be an issue from some of my spey rods, but I think they should still fit diagonally in the 5' bed. I like to store and transport my rods broken down half way, so the 9' and 10' rods will fit no problem.
