if you find yourself in a fair fight then your tactics suck.

massacring them in their sleep and killing them while they're napping is the same, any other argument is semantics.

neither is an unacceptable tactical advantage.

however, if you kill everyone while they're asleep and don't take at least a few prisoners (if doing so is valuable) then, again, your tactics suck.

it's one of those reasons why professional soldiers maintain physical security features and post guards.
if your unit was killed while sleeping then you collectively suck and deserve to be killed in your sleep.

There are situations where taking prisoners is not possible. And you can't pass judgement without getting the specifics of each and every scenario.

The Hessians weren't killed (as a policy, a few rogue soldiers may have gotten "overzealous") - they were captured and paraded through the streets to further rile the population up against England. Many others defected to fight FOR the colonial army.

In fact, only about half of the Hessians even returned to Germany. The other half liked it here so much they decided to stay.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
LOL. this looks like some dudes effing around before a uniform inspection. I had what should have been an easy NAM downgraded to a meritorious mast (letter of commendation) when I was on my first deployment. I remember getting it. They handed me this piece of paper and I was like "cool, what can I do with it". They were like "well, nothing really. It just goes in your service record". I guess I thought it was like a pass or get out of jail free card. We had an Alpha inspection a couple weeks later and I pinned it to the right side of my jacket. The 1stSgt did not find my sense of humor amusing.

Way back in the dark days, when I was in Advanced Individual Training (1985-6, Redstone Aresenal, Huntsville, Alabama), we were in 3 man/room barracks. One Saturday night, one of my roommates went to the EM club and got absolutely blasted. He came staggering back into the room somewhere in the middle of the night, slams open my other roommates wall locker (it wasn't locked... queue Gunny Hartman's famous line from Full Metal Jacket) and starts to piss inside the other guy's locker. He yells at the first guy, who then turns toward the other guy, still in his bunk, and starts pissing on his bed! I thought they were gonna end up killing each other, but it was funnier than shit. Next day, the one who's mattress got soaked, went to the 1st SGT. Shortly thereafter, the first guy got called to Top's office, and then got to go to the Supply Room to order, and pay out of his own pocket, a new mattress for the other roommate.

We (the VA) need to find a treatment code for this. Holy balls.
