different tire sizes front and back

Not sure if this is even an option... running a 265/70/17 in front and 285/70/17 in the rear? Is there any issues with this on a PreRunner? I have a chance to pick up a set of 285/70/17's with about 2000 miles on them (nitto terra grapplers) for $300 from a firefighter buddy who went up in tire sizes on his truck. I do forsee a lift in my future and would like to run this size tire all the way around, but still have all stock suspension in place. Thoughts?

If nothing else, I can sit on them until i lift the truck but wondered if there was any mechanical features in place that wouldn't allow it. My 2003 Z06 would have fits with the traction control if my tire sizes weren't staggered. To my knowledge, my truck does not have traction control, at least not selectable (2005).

 

If the fronts are the same side to side, and the rears are the same side to side, then nothing to worry about. just don't have them different front to back.

 

I'd just throw 'em in the garage until you can get a full set. It would look pretty strange otherwise...

 

That's likely what I'd do (sit on them, that is). It just got me thinking since it was an issue on my Vette. Had to keep about 1/4" difference in tire sizes front to back or the car would throw codes and not run right.

 

wont make a difference on our 2wd trucks. other than looking goofy.

I worked with a guy that had a first gen and he ran some super wide rear tires in the rear and some stockers in the front. We made fun of him so bad!

 

Used to be OK in the old muscle car days. Folks would do it deliberately - giant dragster slicks on the back, tiny wheels on the front.

But now, with ABS and VSC, you need the same size around on all four, whether or not you're 4x4, because each wheel's speed is monitored separately by the electronics.

EDIT: Your 2005 probably doesn't have VSC. But you almost certainly DO have ABS.

That is exactly what i had on an old 2WD 93' pre-tacoma that i built from the ground out. It was a drak grey truck (no chrome) with black steel rims - looked like a bad a$$ rat rod. Of course i had a race 22RE engine in there and a regeared rear end as well

I am goign to go the exact sizes you mentioned for my 05 taco. The difference will be subtle as the tires will fit the wheel wells good. IMHO I doubt it will look obnoxious or goofy.

Are you a firefighter in NorthPort, FL. I have a very good friend who goes by "bird" who works in that fire dept. She drives a speedway blue taco. Let me know if you know her!

 

You can run *wider* tires in the back than the front. But you need to take care they're the same *diameter*

285/70R17 s both *taller* and *wider* than 265/70R17.

You could do: 285/65R17 in back and 265/70R17 in front - assuming of course that you'd made any necessary alterations for the tires to fit. (e.g. removing mudflaps)

I live in NoPo, but work in Punta Gorda. Not FD, but PD. I don't know her personally, but I go by their station on my way to work and have seen the blue taco in the lot from time-to-time. If she's the only female then I know her on site only.

I "toyed" with the idea of running the bigger tire in back simply to see how it would look in comparison as well check for clearances. Since it's not realistic to just swap tires back and forth on the wheels a bunch of times, I would've had just the back done until I decided on when and how to lift my truck. Based on this, though, it seems the tire being of larger diameter out back would potentially be a problem. If nothing else, now I know. Thanks!

 

okay, that makes sense. BTW, That blue speedway TRD sport is the reason i have my 05 Taco! I drove it a couple times and then decided i wanted one (over my 93 pre-taco)

Let us know what you do with the tires. I am currently running 265/70R17 all round on the 05 (no lift, minus front mudflaps) and for my snows i plan to put 285/75R16 at the rear and 265/75R16 in the front using a set of 16" rims I have sitting in the garage.

 

No sweat! I'm gonna buy them because they are in near new shape and decent priced. Its what I had in mind when I set out to lift the truck. The tire part is easy.... lifting is giving me a headache, though! Considering I get a "company car" to drive to-and-from work, my truck sometimes get used on my days off. I use it most often to take my 3 dogs to the dog beach up in Venice... and my wife, too Makes it hard to go spend alot of money on it when it really isn't getting regular use. Nice driveway ornament, though

Next time I stop in NoPo and I see the blue taco, maybe I'll stop in. Don't really know any of the FD there, but good friends with a few of the PD guys. They likely know her. And, yeah.... small world!

 

definitely stop in. I have been to that FD a few times. It is all "green-building" compliant, right down to the weird water saving fixtures in the bathrooms. lol!!
"Bird" is a good kid and very easy to talk to! You will enjoy taking trucks with her.

The only thing you will notice with the larger tiresin the rear will probably be a reduction in te amount of oversteer the truck has.

 

Not at all. I got what I needed from it.

 

If you run different diameter tires front and back it can dramatically effect your ABS.
