an HID kit is a complete kid for upgrading your headlights. In the end, your replacing just the bulbs, but the HID kit includes some additional wiring and ballasts to power the brighter new lights

Yes. To go HID, you need the whole kit, which includes the bulbs

And, as was said above. Go with the 6000K BiXenon, slim ballast kit. This gives you HID lights for your high and low beams, at 6000K temperature (measurement of light hue) which is nearly a white light with a slight blue tint to it.

....the bulbs are much much brighter than stock, and thus draw a lot more power from your system. The ballasts in the wiring of the kit control this, without the kit, you cant run HID bulbs

Follow the link already mentioned. The H4 Bi-Xenon kit works in 98-Current Tacoma's.

Slim Cubby also posted a color temp. chart a few posts down.

FYI, you can buy just bulbs and +2 on not touching the glass when installing.

You're confusing the situation a bit I think.

While it is true that you can buy just the bulbs, you still need the kit as the bulbs by themselves will NOT work without the ignitor ballasts. The only reason you'd buy just the bulbs is to replace a burnt out bulb on an existing HID setup.

Actually they draw less power than the standard halogen bulbs if you're comparing a 35w HID kit and the OEM 55w bulbs.

    Troof.

My 02 Audi A4 came stock with Halogens. I upgraded headlights and fogs to HID and got blasted with "bulb out" warnings after the install because the computer was thinking the lower wattage meant the bulbs were blown. I ended up having to install load equalizers to make the computer happy and everything worked fine. But those load equalizers got HOTTTT.
