It kind of depends on the region. I owned a 2016 6MT and now 2020 6MT and attended multiple dealerships and they all had that look of despair on their faces when I requested an MT. One even asked me if I would be willing to get an AT. Where I live they are spoken for almost immediately. When I picked up my 2016 the salesman thanked me for getting it off the lot because people kept asking about it despite the sold sign in the window. I highly doubt a Taco would ever take a hit due to an MT. The amount of them around is low and there is always going to be a market for them. I would be utterly shocked if Toyota would ever be dumb enough to discontinue it.

It has less to do with what Toyota wants and more to do with emissions regulations. Yes, the MT is a small percentage of theirs sales, but I am sure they aren't dumb enough to aleinate that customer base. By going AT, they have full control over shifting and can manage emissions better to meet regulations. It is a cause and effect relationship, and I suspect that is why all (that I can think of other than commercial) full size trucks stopped offering an MT option a while ago now.

Perhaps I am outdated or purely mistaken but I always thought MT's were supposed to be better on fuel (Likely not now due to the introduction of 7-10 speed automatics). I do however agree they would not want to alienate us. If they do choose to I can imagine they will do it kicking and screaming, not because they want to.

That was the reason that someone noted the hard 5% limit on MTs. The small difference, mostly in test taking routine, somehow affects the CAFE standard.

They do. In the real world, I can meet or beat the fuel economy ratings with an MT. With an AT, it is a pipe dream to hit the city or average targets. Highway can usually be met on a long road trip and not much else.

This is because the test cycle bears no resemblance to how folks actually drive. It is also why hybrids score well and official EV ranges can vary widely for actual.

Interesting. If this is in fact the reason it only makes me like Toyota more. Most others would just say screw it and fold.

    Exactly.

That is the thing. If you keep cutting out 5% of your sales, things turn vanilla real quick.

Yea, I'll keep my locker and ATRAC as tempting as the fake hood scoop is. I can do my own hill starts, I can't lock my own diff without significant expense.

In the same vein, I'll keep my long bed.

IMHO, the Taco could use half the trim levels to give more usable configurations, or at least sell us ones that they already build.

For real, the SR / SR5, Sport / Limited, and OR / Pro are redundant, esp while kneecapping the AC / DC, SB / LB, AT / MT configs.

Yeahhh I find myself wishing I had the longbed sometimes. I need the proper backseat though(no kids, but doggo and it just works better for me. I work remote a lot and need the weathertight, secure space(even the best cap still isn't 1000% weatherproof nor as secure as the cab). Plus even if the DCLB was available in a stick(which to your next point, like why not?) this is already the absolute biggest I'd want to go for the amount of wheeling I do.
Don't forget they added the trail to go in there with the OR and Pro!

The Pro makes zero sense given the price difference from the OR. You could add much nicer shocks and a much nicer skid for that price difference. It's for the folks that want the expenzsivest one.

    Yup.

If a DCLB SR V6 M/T were available, I'd be driving one!

I don't need the fancy! of the Sport, nor the "capability" of the OR.

I'll go a step further with the Pro.. give it a powertrain upgrade (FI for example, maybe different low range TC ratio like the Jeep Rubicon gets). Make it more special.

Exactly! Ideally, make it special in a way that can't be replicated with a few grand of bolt-ons. They could at least give it a front locker, factory sliders, and unique cutout bumpers like the ZR2.

    Pro with everything

If they had a DCLB Manual option, I too would have probably got that.

There's only been a couple times when I truly would have benefited from a 6' bed, but sometimes I'm too much of a "rather have it and not need it, than need it and not have it" kinda guy... Which is why I have ATRAC and a locker I've never used... :anonymous:

Pick better lines when wheeling. Im open/open and the only times I've struggled involved lack of floatation devices. And I've def been into some gnarly stuff (my poor skids will never be straight again lol)

The trail is just a package addon for the SR5

True. Although the ZR2 also has wider axles and a different frame.
