I'll share one of my hunting stories.

So, back in 2000, my dad and I hunted elk up in Grand Teton National Park. The Nat Park Service, or whomever, does periodically allow hunting inside National Parks when they feel it is in the best interests of animal population control. The hunt was a 45 day long season. Due to me having only so much work vacation time, we could only stay for 30 days. So off we go. Mid-October through just shy of Thanksgiving. So maybe 4 or 5 days into the hunt, my dad and I are walking through the forest and com on a small clearing, maybe couple hundred yards across. Just as we got to the edge so we could see in, we see a 4 point bull Elk (or 8 pointer, to those on the east coast) walking towards the trees to leave the clearing. Now normally, he would have been hanging on the meat pole a few hours later... but this being one of the hottest areas for really large bull Elk (Jackson Hole, WY), and us still having 3 weeks left in our hunt at that point, my dad says "let's keep an eye on him, he may have a bigger friend near by, but we have plenty of time left, we'll surely see some big bulls later on, we don't want to waste a tag on this one."

So you can guess how the story ends, right?? 3+ weeks later, we're breaking camp..... and that was the last !@#$%^ Elk we saw the entire trip. See, Wyoming/Yellowstone/western Montana had extremely bad forest fires that summer. Kind of like many states out here had last summer... and when we stopped at the Park Ranger's station to talk, their theory was that most of the Elk and other wildlife had left the area due to the fires. He was probably right. As my dad and I drove back south through the National Elk Preserve just north of the town of Jackson, there were hardly any Elk in it, and the locals told us the Preserve was usually jam packed within a few days after the start of Elk season, as the animals know they are protected in the Preserve. It was a month into the season by this time.

Bottom line, I have a ton of great memories form that trip with my dad. I started hunting with him when I was 11 (birds, rabbits) and hunted with him almost every year until 2008. He passed away in 2013.
