3rd Gen Tacoma Spark Plug Replacement.

I’ll take your advice, I use only top-tier fuel from a brand dealer, regularly replace my air filter and pcv valve, oil changes so I should easily make it to 100k miles.

 

I changed them at 112k. They looked perfect and gapped at factory spec

 

I get top tier as well, except for when it's unavailable on the road. Like 95% top tier anyways.

 

I changed mine at 60k, mostly because the Service Schedule says they need to be changed at 60k to maintain the emissions warranty.

However, two of mine on the passenger side were, at best, just over finger tight. As far as I know no one was ever in there. Ive owned the truck since new and the only thing Toyota did was replace the fuel rail under warranty.

Heres the three from the passenger side, one looked clean, and two others were brown and the coil packs were brown also.

Never been in deep water, never washed the engine bay, and never touched the plugs until today. No oil leaks either.

 

Eeks. That’s SFUS. Did you replace the coil packs? How’s it run now?

 

100k update. Truck is at 158k right now. Plugs were last done at 60K. Something seems to be going on with cylinder number 3. Coil had soot like stuff on it, plug was worn and black. It’s possible I might have left it loose and it’s just carbon. Let’s get another 100k out of it.

This time I also took way less stuff of from the drivers side, but did have to pry stuff out of the way.

My #3 coil looked exactly like that. Plug felt loose, even though I torqued it to spec. This time I tightened a bit more, will recheck in about 20k miles and see.

 

oh my god those prices…. This is what I was quoted for when I went in for my fuel pump and third brake light recall.


The “heater core appears to be leaking” is some complete bs. The tech told me “well I saw some residue and had to add coolant to the system so that’s why I quoted to replace the core.” I denied everything on the list. Changing the fluids and spark plugs myself.

 

This new data is interesting. Hearing them loosen after folks have serviced them might lead back to that weird detonation loosening theory?

I'd die on my own sword before I get close to paying half of that for a service.

The heater core is worrying, but that can be tackled or done for much less at an independent shop.

 

The heater core wasn’t leaking at all. The only coolant I have seen is from where the tech spilled it when he “topped it off”

 

Ohhhhhh no! That is not good. I'd run from that place.

The Toyota pink stuff does seem to leave a lot of evidence when it is leaking. I keep meaning to scope the transfer pipe on the back of the engine.



Seriously though, the plugs are not bad at all and the driveline fluids are freaking easy.

 

Finding the xfer case fluid has been the hardest part. $90 for a single liter. Still waiting on copper seals as well.

 

Initially, I went with Ravenol. Since, I got the 2Lo Mod and am using it a lot. This time, I opted for the Toyota stuff esp after seeing the VOAs between the two.

Just ordered recently and this was the best price that I found:

Did a ton of research on this before I drained and replaced mine. Redline 75W85 for the differentials and Redline 75MTLV for the transfer case.

 

Hi there, just replaced plugs, air filter and cleaned throttle body at 115000. This was last week and engine seems to be running smoothly, yet my mpg seems to be 1 to 2 mpgs lower than before tune up. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
2016 TRD sport 4x4 dcsb all stock.
Oem plugs, Fram engine air filter.
Do these trucks need throttle body to be reprogrammed? If I take it to the dealer I'm sure they'll charge an arm and a leg just to do that or diagnose.
