Agreed, but three different types of locks in front of a bunch of hiking hippies with a truck full of toys wouldn't look good if DNR or LE rolled up. If push came to shove and night was about to fall, thats another story. :D

I would of never used; bolt cutters, cut off wheel or a chain with the hook on the lock chained to your truck.

Same thing happened to us! Came down the mountain to a locked gate. Tried calling the wife, no service. We ended up following logging roads up over the mountain from Gleneden Beach down to Depoe Bay, where there was another locked gate. But we could see houses over the berm, so I walked into a yard with no back fence, knocked on the door and asked if he minded us driving through his yard. Luckily we’d been shooting and he was wearing a Remington shirt. His boys helped us move a trailer from beside the house so we could get by and we drove through his yard and out into the street. We were late for dinner :)

    bunch of stuff goin on
Funny you post this, this summer I was on a wildland fire engine for the DNR and had a couple calls for people doing the exact same thing, shooting and picking up trash etc. It was mostly at Alger, as far as legality no one will bother you or has the ability to bother you besides the LEO. That all being said use the land responsibility and don’t litter. There are often a bunch of people coming and going through those gates and it’s standard to lock them when you leave.

I have bolt cutters because I've seen public access trails have their gates closed and locked by people camping up those roads. If there is no signage with legit state marked reasons, the road is open and I'm going in. But never been locked in before, lol.

Most of the gates I have come across in Washington dnr areas have the locks inside of a cylinder so you’d need to cut through the actual gate with a grinder to get out/in. The BLM gates I have come across have chains and locks so bolt cutters/grinder would work.

Most of the gates I’ve come across in Oregon are the same, bolt cutters won’t get you anywhere.

That tab that hangs down usually goes into a box, then the lock holds it in place. Putting the lock on with the gate open will prevent the gate from being able to close fully. Most gates are somewhere along the same or similar lines, where if you put the lock in there when it's open, it cannot close.

interesting, is there nothing that says its illegal to put your personal lock on a gate? Just curious. I do think its a great idea though. I was locked in on public land in CA. I was camping and heard someone super early in the morning but figured it was just someone looking for a spot. I'm guessing it was a worker looking for people but didnt se me due to me being behind a hill that he didn't check. I had to make my own way out. it was a weekend and they were apparently going to be closed for some period of time which i had no idea about.

I'm sure technically yes, and I've never done it myself, but was with a group that did it and we didn't catch any flack :notsure: they have bigger fish to fry, and it's easily removable with bolt cutters should it be needed.

    Like, so many.
So is the idea to lock yourself in then let yourself out?
Or this prevents the gate from being locked?

I think this is standard LOTO procedure. Lock Out Tag Out. You attach your own lock to the other lock (with a tag indicating you are inside, and when you expect to exit), but not to the gate bolt itself. That way when someone pulls up to push the DNR lock closed they know there is still someone in there. Of course that does not prevent that same person from locking you in, but still that is the gist of using that type of LOTO lock.

ah okay, that would make much more sense to put this lock onto the other lock. Considering they leave the lock there.
