Core-Shifter for 3rd Gen V6

Aw man. Could’ve done something fun with it. Throttle knob for your lawnmower or something. I was thinking that I could use three of them for the feed levers on my drill press.

 

Question/thought about the noise and isolation of this kit… I’ve heard that Core’s isolator is made from rubber and therefore might make the feel not as crisp. Would using a 1/4” thick delrin/copolymer block sandwich between the shaft and the shifter help with noise while still keeping the stiffness?

 

I had thought about that, but I'm not sure nylon/delrin would do a whole lot, but definitely post results if you try. The core one is thin (1/16") and I don't think you would want to go much thicker. Something softer like UHMW may work better?

I never got around to doing anything because the noise hast bothered me enough yet.

 

I’ll definitely try it as is first then, if the sound is too much, go from there. I’m not concerned about the sound when I’m driving solo (music always up to 11), it’s more when the family is in tow.

That was fast! Ordered on the 11th. Arrived today.

 

Interesting... Did they change the design of the top pedestal and boot or is my memory just crap? Do you have another rubber boot that covers everything, or is that all you have?

 

This is what he sent. That top seal seals the gap between the aluminum housing and the shaft. He actually included a spare. So, they must wear out. I’m unaware of any other booties that there “should” be. There is the OE boot that seals the shifter to the floor. I’ll need to futz with that of course. But, nothing else in the box.

 

Yeah, definitely looks like some minor design changes, but for the better.

 

@BillDaCat8 has a 2nd gen. That is likely the difference vs. the 3rd gen setup.

I have a 2nd gen truck with an RC62F. This is the 3rd gen shifter.

 

Wow! I didn’t realize swapping a 3rd gen trans into a 2nd gen was a thing. You get to enjoy the better gear ratios. Cool.

 

I suppose that I made it a thing. From what I can tell, I’m the first to do it. @rheath08 has pulled off the swap as well. He’ll be in here asking questions soon enough.

 

I saw they were back in stock, and have had my eye on them for about 6 months now. I keep going back and forth on the core shifter. I’ve driven very nice shifting cars before and this rc62f may be the worst shifting anything I’ve ever had the pleasure of maneuvering, and I think this is either going to fix almost everything or feel like putting lipstick on a pig. Seriously though I’ve driven 3 different 200+k mile w-series transmissions, older r-series (RIP MK3 Supra), etc all feel better. Does this fix the feel and ease of shifting? I thought of buying a heavier shift knob for the factory shifter but I see how much the stock knob yeets around while wheeling. Do you all feel like the core shifter is a good solution or do I need to wait another 100,000 miles to have it thoroughly broken in and sloppy ?

EDIT: If anyone in the LA or surrounding area has one and would let me try it out, I’d like to see how it grabs and if it compliments the great transmission that I know is lying under the horrible shifter and clutch fluid accumulator.

Do you remember what size/pitch allen-head bolt you got?

 

(Since my last post on this thread I have ordered a shifter and 12x1.25 adapter for a factory look)

funny story, a month or so ago I stalled my truck (incline / wife was talking to me / CLUTCH ACCUMULATOR) and in the process of restarting I accidentally threw it in reverse and shot backwards, and stopped about 1/2’ away from the car behind me. Needless to say I’m looking forward to the increased pressure to the reverse gear - I legitimately didn’t feel the the extra resistance, and as I was in a hurry, I didn’t even think twice about it. Also when restarting the engine, I didn’t notice the extra *beep* when the trans went into reverse. This is my third manual car, and I’ve never had such a bad stall since learning to drive manual!

Slapping from neutral to reverse can be a bit easy. I do like that here is no lockout lever though. Just a personal thing.
