How to: drop, clean, and reinstall the 2nd Gen transmission pan and filter

Yeah, filter might imply a higher level of 'filtration' than what this provides haha. You can see in the pic its just a fine mesh screen. Meant to grab the larger particles that might cause damage, not the ultra fine stuff

 

Do you think it really worth the extra time/money to remove the pan? I mean, if oil look clean, i dont think the mesh can clog.

 

My personal opinion is that the magnets and the screen do their job. So is this “necessary”? Probably not. But it can’t hurt, and especially if your fluid was really dark and dirty I say why not take the extra step? I’m trying to extend the life of this vehicle and its components as far as I reasonably can.

 

You torque to 21 and you will likely be replacing a pan like me. Seriously OP - change that to 15. Lots of people will reference this.

 

I absolutely will if someone can get me a reference. I’m all for anecdotals but how can it be that everyone knows the value is wrong but Toyota has never corrected it? I will however add a note to that spec referencing the posts you and someone else made regarding this.

I torqued to 21 ft lbs the 1st time I changed the transmission fluid. 2nd time around discovered I had stripped it and had to replace the pan too. Went by feel 2nd time around and didn't use a torque wrench.

FWIW, a new filter from RockAuto is about $11 and comes with gaskets.

Suggest to replace it rather than cleaning it. Its only $11 and you need to remove it to clean.......

If you post that P/N I’ll edit it into the original post as an option. I personally prefer to go OEM if at all possible, but many are perfectly comfortable with aftermarket. The OEM filter was absurdly expensive.

 

I used the WIX 58136.

Sorry the cost has risen to about $25. Still significantly less expensive than $650

 

I used the NAPA version, it was about $25 with the gaskets.

Is it a filter or a metal screen? Why would you replace a metal screen?

 

It’s easier to replace it than to clean it.

Because its a PITA to clean and you can't access all of it to clean. Plus when you are done, how do you know its clean?. Also the risk of damaging it.......

Its a small inexpensive part that a major component depends on it performing. For $25 not worth gambling a $4000 transmission.

Just ain't worth the trouble.

 

I just figured you have to remove it to replace it, (if it appears dirty in the first place) so why wouldn’t you wash it down with brake cleaner and put it back in? I don’t know though, I’ve never removed the pan, just had fluid exchanges done.

You’re not really going to be able to tell how much debris is on the screen without removing it and pouring out the excess fluid inside.

As for the debate on clean or replace, if something is in good condition and can be cleaned up good as new, I’d rather keep it than replace it. The filter isn’t a consumable so to me, inspect, clean and replace is fine. But, just a personal preference.

 

I replaced the filter/strainer with the genuine Toyota part at 3rd drain & fill. A small price to pay since I probably don’t need to replace it for another 100k.

 

Was just quoted $72 for the strainer at the stealership. But they had ATF WS for $9.95 a quart, beating some of the Amazonians.
