Does your traction control not function correctly in 2wd, or are you just not used to how it functions and don't completely trust it?

My '17 Taco is the first vehicle I've owned that has functioning traction control, and at first I hated it having grown up with everything manual and I had to control tire spin myself. Once I just let it do its thing during normal street driving in the winter months, I've learned to trust it and it does really well, even in 2wd.

Once I'm off road though, all that stuff gets turned off immediately.

The 2wd traction control (TRAC) is almost useless in snow/ice conditions but better than nothing. AutoLSD takes it up a notch, but is still nothing like AWD/4WD.

4Runner and FJ were both body-on-frame with awd, but obv not pickup format. It looks like there was a GMC Sierra Denali 1500 offered in AWD in the second generation. Most body on frame pickups indeed seemed to be offered PT 4x4 only.

Yeah out of some of the wackier packaged fancy GMCs that utilize the weaker AWD tcase on Chevys side, any other true truck doesnt have AWD just part time.

That stated. On our side of the fence it would be possible to bolt stuff up given the fact like you stated we have the same drivetrain in the FJ 4runner AWD. Would it be worth it.... Eeeeh

As I mentioned before this is my first vehicle with any form of traction control and once I let it do it's thing and not micro manage it, it does what it needs to do. I grew up on the Washington side of the mouth of the Columbia Gorge and we got ice insteaad of snow every year and I learned how to drive a 1969 2wd Datsun pickup with a 4spd manual, with manual brakes, and manual steering.

Although not complicated, it does take some paying more attention than driving in summer conditions.

    So...
If you are driving on a known slick surface, just put it in 4WD and go about your business. Normal 2wd traction control would be goofy to bother with.

If you are driving on an potentially but unknown for sure slick surface in winter temperatures, just use common sense and drive within the potential road conditions. Put in 4WD as needed, otherwise let the traction control do it's thing.

If you are driving winter roads at summer road speeds, then you are an idiot and want to be lazy about your responsibilies as a driver.
