Friend of mine had the 2.7 in a 2nd gen ACLB with the 5MT. We drove it into the mountains near Tahoe more than once and, while it wasn't fast, I thought it had sufficent power to keep up with traffic if you shifted it at the right times. The manual gearing matched with the engine's powerband pretty well. Didn't try towing with it, but we had probably 200 lbs of gear under a camper shell.

Never tried the 2.7 with AT. Like others have said, life is too short to drive a car you really don't like, assuming you can rectify the situation without wrecking your financials. Sticking to a healthy budget should always be the first priority.

You also might be able to find someone willing to trade. Maybe someone has an MT or even a V6 you might like more. Do be forewarned, though, the V6 is more powerful on paper but doesn't really feel like it until 4000 rpms. No variant of this truck is going to feel fast in my experience.

    Ahh, nice catch.
    Here is the correct one.

No. I have a 2017 2.7 with the good old 5 speed manual. Not gutless at all.

    Yeah...I don't think I would ever want a automatic.

2017 is the absolute last ones to buy with the 4 cylinder since it could be had with a MT.

I've been looking for a 2016 or '17 4 cylinder 5 speed for a new work truck, zilch out there.

I don’t understand comments like this. I’ve had 5 different trucks from an F150 V8 to a Colorado DCSB with a 4 cyl. When I pressed the gas pedal going 45 mph on the Colorado the engine would roar but it didn’t do much, I told riders the pedal was just a volume control lol. At least with my Tacoma 2.7L it moves when I hit the gas. I use ECT around town and rural roads for better performance. On the interstate I do 75 with no problems other than if it’s in cruise control up a grade it might cycle from 6-5 and back (it’s an auto) in which case I just shift over to S mode and put it in 5 or if a big grade I might hit 4. It does everything I want it to, I got the 2.7L for its reliability and price point, test drove it before I bought and have absolutely no regrets. It’s a 4 cyl not a race car but it gets the job done. So far it’s my favorite truck of all I’ve owned.

Hit that ECT button, learn to use all its features like S mode and quit whining, or trade or sell it is the only advice I can offer. Life’s too short not to be happy with what you have.

Just drove back from Joshua tree and passing Palm Springs there are those giant windmills and I was driving against the wind uphill and the fastest speed I could go was 60 mph with the gas pedal mashed. My fourth gear just couldn’t make up its mind.

Same here, my '96 2.7 MT has carried me 414,000 trouble free miles over all sorts of conditions. Has always had plenty of powe to get the job done.

I had a 2017 2.7 AC MT. For the most part it was fine, I actually really enjoyed in minus a few situations like going on the 110 freeway here in LA were you had to go from a stop sign to about 70mph with 10 feet of merge. Mtn passes were ok. Sucked in Baja in soft sand when I had to drive in 4low in situations all other guys were in 4high. 3-4k in 4lo going about 3 mph in soft sand.

I finally just traded it in and got the v6. Thought I’d miss the manual but with the v6 I’m shocked that I don’t miss it at all

Perfect truck you have there. When people pull up next to me and hate on my driving, I tell them “you should see how I park”

My 4 cyl SR is about a year old and I am starting to use the ECT button more. I don't drive long distances so it's perfect for my needs. The only thing I wish it had was keyless entry and that is on my list to look into.

I never considered the V6 because of cost at the time.

To squeeze "performance" from a 4 popper, you need to be willing to stick your foot in it.

The power band is in the high revs of the engine. It ain't gonna pull like a V-6 or V-8.

The engine probably won't show much life until well over 3500 rpm.

    Step on it.

I’ve added keyless entry and OEM fog lights to my SR, and TW was a big help there. Didn’t think I would miss keyless entry until I went to the passenger side one day and there was no key lock lol.

This is the OEM (sort of, actually Toyota Dealers kit) keyless entry mod I did for my Tacoma if you’re a diy type you might want this:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/installing-oem-keyless-entry.619447/
read through the whole thread and you will see I have some additional advice there.
It works fine, but if I were to do it again I might consider using a reputable car stereo/security system company to install keyless entry and a security system add on for it.
One thing I like about doing the oem mod though is I know where every wire goes and if I have any troubles I have the schematics etc.

And you won't need to remove the cab to change the plastic water pipe on the back side of the engine.
