I’m shopping to replace my 1st gen taco that got totaled. Most important for me is 4x4, extd cab, V6. Simple, old school.
In my small world since happily owning my SR5, and wanting to keep the same equipment, I can’t figure out the differences between the SR5, TRD, TRD Off-road, and TRD Sport. Some TRD Off-road are 4x4 and some aren’t. I think I’ve also seen a TRD Sport that was 4x4 but most aren’t.
I’ve read the TRD Sport version is for the ride comfort and suspension, whereas the TRD Off-road is stiffer and has a locking differential. Yet I think I’ve seen some TRD Sport that had locking differential?
All I want is old school 4x4, on a budget meaning around 10k. I just want what I had.
Can you help navigate and explain these differences to me? Thank you.

Before 98 the highest trim was sr5, which was the extra stuff like power antenna, tilt steering wheel, moonroof, power windows, etc you get the idea. Starting in 98 they had the ‘trd offroad’ came with the rear e locker. This is the one you want. I dont believe ther was such thing as a sport for the 1st gen. A lot of tacos had the trd off road decal in the bed beginning in 01 but a lot of them are preeunners. Stick to the 98+ for the e locker, another thing to not look over is the rear end some came with 4.10’s others came with a highers ratio, if you plan on running a bigger setup on wheels and tires.

What kind of truck got totaled? It sound like you had one of the unicorns that everyone wants, and they are pretty irreplaceable. Next best would be a 01-04 Extra Cab 4x4.
