Let's get some terms straight as to not add confusion to the thread.
UCON is a piggy back type self tuner with 3 levels of generic maps depending on presence of catalytic converters and a 7th injector option, that manipulates and spoofs signals to the oem ECU. Able to use TRD S/C flashed ECU but tends to work better without the TRD flash.
OVTune is a flashing device to overwrite the oem ECU.
HPTuner is a flashing device to overwrite the oem ECU with datalogging capabilities. Works better with the expanded tables provided by the TRD S/C flash.

Please correct any of my errors.

I don't know anything. I am trying to figure this out. This all sounds good, I called URD and that is how they explained it as well. Their website briefly explains what variables it alters.

I am the type of guy when I install something in my car I like to know exactly what it is doing and how.

So I just read, gather some facts, see what people say on here, then I call the manufactures and see what they say.

I am about to pull the trigger on the OVTune though, just waiting on an email from them with several questions that I have which I am hoping they give me a straight answer.

Thank's for the clarification. Yeah, I don't know shit, just here learning hoping to make my Urban Runner more responsive.

Just trying to learn a bit myself with my new (to me) 2009 PreRunner. I thought OVTune was putting almost all their efforts into the 3rd Gen platform. I see you have headers and the pedal commander. How effective would you rate them? Does a tune make the pedal commander unnecessary?

    No dice :pout:

Specified the hardware to be the same denso 768k (might have those #'s slightly wrong..) as the tacomas and still failed to read. Checked all the other toyota hardware options, too.

One of the ideas Justin had that I still need to do more research on, too, is how plug n play a tacoma ECU would be in the 4runner chassis. If it's a matter of just swapping around a few pins might be worth it.[/QUOTE]

Years ago (2009) I swapped my Australian Hilux ECU for a Tacoma ECU to enable reflashing once I fitted the TRD blower. There was a few pin outs to change but all good and I am still running this setup today.

Out of all the minimal mods that I have done, Pedal Commander is by far the best and first investment into your truck. It changes throttle to hit higher RPMS from the start, hold the RPM's longer, and within the modes (Eco, City, SPort, Sport2) you have 8 sensitivity levels. I currently have mine on Sport with +1 Sensitivity. It actually saves gas if you do not floor. It instantly pulls at 2000 rpm.

When I installed the aFe CAI barely felt anything, sounds great though! Then I had this mechanic install the headers, and the idiot did half ass job so it was leaking everywhere. Fix the problem, and they are great! Its not an enormous gain, but you can feel it and it also sounds great.

However, if I didnt have the Pedal Commander, it would not put everything together. The Headers increase toque but the RPM's have to be at 2000 rpm for this. So the Pedal Commander gets that done real good. Holding the gears longer above 2000 rpm so you can feel the difference.

The UVtune, I read it tunes throttle, but I am not sure if it will interfere with the Pedal Commander. I emailed OVtune 3 days ago with several questions, one which includes the question you just posed. As soon as I get an answer I will let you know.

I am getting 19 - 21 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on highway. I have OEM 18" wheels and K0'2 265/65/18 rate E. As soon as my RR6-H wheels ship in July/Aug I will be putting lighter tires and further improve gas. These E K02 weigh 54 lbs.

So what the pedal commander does is intercept the throttle position signal and modify it. I.e. if you're in sport mode and pressing the throttle half down, it'll instead show you're pressing it 75% down, but if you're in eco mode, it'd only show 30% down. It doesn't change anything else, nothing in the trans tables, nothing in the actual tune.

Both OVTune and HPTuners have the ability to adjust the throttle position map, rendering a pedal commander redundant and unnecessary.

Not necessarily redundant/unnecessary. PC can allow for adjustments on the fly rather than editing tables and flashing a tune to go from eco to sport. There are instances on the trail where you might want more/less throttle response where a PC could be beneficial.

Thanks for posting up those observations. Sounds like the pedal commander wouldn't do much for a manual trans model. Considering headers, cam gears, and a tune.

Rev hang can be deleted with Hptuners which is worth the price alone in my eyes. Then the ability to maximize and personalize tuning for mods makes it a no brainer.

Good point, you might want to soften up the response on the trail, definitely a case for it there

    Correct.

However,, I am currently getting 21 mpg in the city with my Pedal Commander. I don't know how much this opens the throttle body, but as soon as I step on it it gets me to 2000 rpm without wasting gas to get there.

And at 2000 rpms and above I feel the Headers pull. If I didnt have the Pedal Commander to give me that instant Throttle Response, having the headers would be a disappointment. I would not be able to feel the increased torque until several seconds, and that is with a heavy foot on the pedal which tends to hold the gears longer when I dont want to. With the Pedal Commander I am instantly in 2000 rpms pulling, and unless I am pushing down heavy, it'll shift according for normal driving.

I figured that the OVtune would make the Pedal Commander obsolete, I just want confirmation from OV themselves, among with my other 5 questions.

Nice. Because I love my PC. So it can still parallel with HP or OV tune huh. That sounds great.
