Do you find that the thickness of the seal makes your cap sit up too high off of the bed rail? If yours looks like mine, any trouble with it leaking around the seal?

I replaced my old smashed foam seal with the new style. I have mine tightened to ARE spec, it just seems like the thickness of the seal makes it ride too high on the rail. Typically the trim on the edge of my cap sits lower than the bottom of the bed rail.

    thoughts?

Looks fine. I think the difference would be leaking, or not leaking. I'd choose the latter. LOL.
Really does not look bad at all.

Interesting. How old is your cap? My 20-year-old Leer cap, that I have on my Ford Ranger, has beading like that, and it sits proud of the bed tops. The new Leer cap, that I have on my 2021 Tacoma, has no beading and wraps over the top of the bed. Obviously when the cap wraps over, the gasket would be hidden.

There is one possible advantage to the older cap, with the beading. As you can see in the picture below, with an outside-the-cap Kargo Master type rack, the brackets are sandwiched between the bed and the cap. This would not be possible if the cap wraps over. (That's one reason I went with the Prinsu rack on the Tacoma.)

I agree on the importance of no leak. I am thinking that this style of seal is just not the right choice for my application.

Cap is less than 2 years old, the ARE model that I have still uses beading at the base. The original seal I used was the flat foam type and the cap wrapped around the bed as you describe (and your picture shows). This is with a new double bulb type seal. The new seal is .5" thick, which is much thicker than the one I removed.

It seals up fine, I am just a little worried about the void it creates under the lip of the cap and that its leading edge sits up slightly higher than the roofline now. I suppose I may just order another traditional style seal.

I would stay with the bulb seal. The foam type mashes down to nothing, especially when you have something as heavy as a camper top. Perhaps you can find a thinner bulb seal?

Mine looks similar. It is a PITA to replace though so I'll probably leave it and hope if flattens more over time. I'm sure it seals better than the thin flat foam it replaced, I just expected it to crush more.
