True story…Back In our younger days my wife and I frequented a nudist camp near Austin, TX known as Hippie Hollow. One time we were there they were having a police officer convention. What struck me is that all the beer they were drinking and nobody was getting out to go pee. All those cops just peeing in the river. That is really relaxing when you are just talking and peeing. But then they got mad when I did it. I was in a canoe. Not everyone got mad. Some saw it as a photo opportunity. I know because I got their Christmas card. I don’t remember it being that cold that day.

    good afternoon whateverers

    Another hunting story.

Or actually, another part of the earlier hunting trip to Grand Teton N.P. in 2000 when my dad and I passed up a 4 point bull Elk in week 1 and then never saw shit over the next 3+ weeks and went home empty handed....

So, my dad and I always camped in a WW2 era large Army surplus canvas tent. He had it lengthened from 10x10 to 10'x20' waaaay back in the 1960's or so. Anyway, this trip to Grand Teton's was mid-October through just before Thanksgiving, 2000. The first week we beautiful. Highs in the 50's to 60's... overnight lows maybe around 30, if even that cold. Way too easy, right??

Then one night, winter arrived. No snow, but we had a problem. Our alarm clocks (we always used two... paranoia, you know) both failed to go off, and we woke up well after day break. We usually woke up at 0430 so we could eat, and get out to a hopeful starting point for the days hunt well before first light. My dad was not amused at this. But we quickly discovered why the clocks both failed. They were both mechanical, wind up clocks. Winter arrived in the night, as I said, with bitter cold temps. And the spring mechanisms in both clocks froze and stopped working.

Thar part of north-west Wyoming being bear country, we were warned by the National Park Service Rangers to keep anything that a bear might even *think* of as food, in a secure, locked container. So after each meal, I put the food in the cab or my truck and locked it. That morning, when i went out to get the breakfast food, just for giggles, I checked the [built in] thermometer in my truck.... it read -19*F. Yep, NEGATIVE 19* F. For the next 3+ weeks of the hunt, the nightly temps were always around the same (-19*F) and the daily high never got above maybe 25*F.

Remember, we were in a tent. We had a great little wood stove for heat, but that lasts only as long as someone keeps feeding in logs. So every night when we went to cook dinner, it was always a challenge. It was so damn cold, that canned goods expanded when the liquid inside the cams froze... even when/if you could open the end of the can, you could not force anything out because it had expanded. And of course all our water cans/bottles/canteens were frozen solid. We took an axe and walked the 200 yards to the nearby creek - which was also quite solid, and chopped out a chunk of ice, took it back to the camp and melted it in a big stew pot. That's how we got liquid water. I can't now recall exactly what the hell we did about the canned goods, but we obviously survived.

My dad had absolutely no fat on him, he was always thin as a rail. He slept in 3 sleeping bags, one inside the other, and wore a full pair of long johns and a very thick wool cap to bed at night, and he still got cold. I had two sleeping bags, long johns and a quilt on top of my sleeping bags. When we woke up every morning, our sleeping bags, and the insides of the tent right above our faces was about 1/4" thick with ice form the condensing moisture of our breathing.

Oh, and just in case you were wondering about those mechanical alarm clocks from way back at the beginning of this story? I slept with both of them inside my sleeping bag every night, and they both worked just fine after that. Of course they both froze up during the day when they were just sitting around, but my body heat kept my wrist watch from freezing, and I just had to reset the alarm clocks every night.

I can readily think of at least two more hunting stories, I'll share when I get the chance. I know I have many more..... hopefully I will be able to remember more than just the two others so I can share.

Yet another true story. We went on a family vacation to visit my uncle in Austin. My brothers and sisters and I wanted to go explore the city. Our uncle warned us to stay away from 5th street. He said it got pretty wild there. So of course we headed straight for 5th street. He was correct. It was like Mardi Gras Texas style. I was like 16 walking around drinking beer and nobody cared. That was a fun time.
