I use S mode all the time, I have the ECT always on mod as well. I installed a throttle signal amplifier and that made a big difference in drive-ability, much more responsive.

A supercharger would give you the power you need if you really want to keep the truck.

    4 banger sucks?
Depends on how you look at it. I think my wifes Sienna is a race car because I lite up the tires on it after driving the 4 banger Tacoma.
I apply the gas like I do on the Tacoma and all I get is tire spin on the Sienna. Its even more fun with my 300 HP 65 Galaxie.
So times going up hills I wonder if I am going to have to get out and push.
When they made the Tacoma bigger that little engine which I love just really isnt up to pulling a truck that size around.
Ive learned to look at the situation and adjust to how the 4 cylinder is driven.

    Today I learned the 2.7 has a redline of 5500. That's disappointing.

Is it capped at 5500 in the manuals?

Edit: Did 2 seconds of research. Max HP at 5200 rpm. So yeah 5500 makes sense in that regard. Just figured a 4 banger would continue making power up there.

The 2020 4 banger i test drove was an access cab manual transmission 4x4. When i drove it up back the hill leading to the dealer. Hell i had to wind up the chipmunks to the point they didn't sound happy anymore. Truck went barely ok imo, but i'd been use to my v8 tundra. I do some towing every now and then. I felt this 4 cyl. tacoma wouldn't be in my cards. So far the v6 does everything my tundra did, and well while getting far better fuel mileage.

Should have just pushed that ECT button you say you don’t need for light towing with your V6 lol :D
I4 does just fine once you’re used to it and know how to get the best performance out of it. See the video on post #85.
Also see this video with a race between an I4 and V6 Tacoma. The I4 actually beats the V6 on the first part of the run, something I’ve always suspected due to the Atkinson cycle adversely impacting the V6 on a start and its 3.91 rear end compared to the I4’s 4.30.
And the 2.7L I4 is perfectly happy at higher rpm’s if that’s where it needs to be, that’s where the max hp is.

The v6 spark plugs are pretty easy to replace.

Manual trans 4cyl was last available in 2017.

I loved my 4banger manual taco, I'd buy another one in a heart beat once I'm not on my feet 10 hours a day and my knees can get a break. That being said, they are definitely not quick and you can't depend on standing on the skinny pedal to get you out of a tight spot.

Wait. What? 159 hp in a 4,500 lb 4x4 truck = slow as chit? Say it ain't so!!
My bud's 2.7 Ford has 2x the power and gets the same mileage ;-)

I'm sure this impresses people, but a rolling start at 40MPH to 102MPH in 35 seconds is slow as fuck

I skipped through the video to see if it actually made it lmao. The 4 banger is not a power house. That was just silly

Man, you got that right. I never would have ever thought that in 2020 and beyond that anything would still have a cartridge oil filter. Last I saw of those was when I was a kid on my dad's 56' DeSoto.
Although I am jealous of my son's Forester that has the filter on top, right in your face when you pop the hood..

How do you know the Atkinson cycle is what's limiting power in the low end WRT the 2GR- FKS?
Mat (OVtune) has uncovered several ways that throttle is limited in the stock calibration. I can tell you that even running the Atkinson "disable" tune (SFOB) for M/T trucks does not get rid of the low end bog completely. It will still nose over for a bit at launch and then take off.

I really don’t know, just read some input from some here on TW.

Could be other causes I suppose as you say.

Define under-powered. Does it 'go'? Yes. If it takes a few seconds longer to get to 60+ mph, does that really matter? Will it still bring a bed-load of lumber home? Yup.
That being said, if I was gonna tow, say, a travel trailer .. Yeah a 4 cyl would be under powered, but then again I wouldn't have bought a 4 cyl knowing that.
Now I'm not pointing a finger at anyone, but I've always wondered why people buy a big heavy 4x4 truck and expect it to perform like a muscle car.
Call me crazy or stupid, but don't you usually by a truck because you need a 'truck'? I know... I'm nuts.
