Took my new truck on vacation out to the Blue ridge pkw, and Smokies.
Not to loaded up, camping gear for two. Truck is just broken in, have 4,000 miles on it after the trip.
On long grades with steady throttle you can feel it, light surging, stumble,
Only way I can describe it. No aftermarket engine mods. Just wondering if this is normal? Any way to fix it? Thanks in advance.

Some pics from trip, other than the above issue, Love the truck!

Probably a silly question, but did you downshift at all or just keep it in 6th?

There's a lot of factors here. What speed were you at, what gear were you in, how loaded was the truck, and how steep was the grade? 5th and 6th gear really wouldn't be an option if the truck is needing more power, you'd have to be going pretty fast to be at the top of those gears.

Like an engine miss. Feels like a lil tiny stutter or hiccup, like a fish bite when you're fishing.

Mine does this too if I’m in the wrong gear going-up a steep hill. With these trucks I’ve found it’s better to be a gear lower than you think you need to be when climbing a steep hill, driveway or trail. I’d rather wind the engine out a bit more as opposed to lugging it.

Not to hijack this thread (new Tacoma owner) I have an automatic 2021 and just this past weekend I was going up a hill after a cold start and the truck down shifted on its own. I had to let go of the gas pedal and then slowly apply pressure

Anyone know what could have happened? Maybe I gassed it too soon? And I’m only at 1560 on the ODO

granted I got it two weeks ago, and went on a long trip so I added some quick miles

Sounds normal to me. The truck is going to try to maintain speed going up a hill or with any increased load, unless you give it more throttle, it can only do that by downshifting. And if you give it more throttle, it's also probably going to downshift to aid in acceleration.

My 2021 Tacoma Off-road AT is 3 weeks old just passed 1k, and from day one it has had a stuttering problem when under a load during moderate acceleration, or just cruising at 60 mph in either 5 or 6th gear. Gets worse up a hill. It feels like when you lug the motor in a manual transmission. Seems worse in rainy weather. Feels like it’s missing to me. Took it back to the dealership at 350 miles and the tech said it’s normal for these rigs. I’m like BS it is. There is clearly a problem. That absolutely can not be void for a motor. Drive my daughters 2019 Tacoma and it did something similar. I have driven nothing but 91 and 92 octane. WTH Toyota! Something is wrong with the new Tacoma’s you are producing. I was wondering if they purposely have to tune the motor for gas milage rather then for adequate power to meet cafe standards???

Might be time for a tune.

They will up shift at will. Mine would go to 6th gear at 1100rpm @ 45mph
