New to forum. I got my 2019 TRD Sport AT last January with 14,000 mi. It has 18,000 mi. on it now. I know the manual says every 10,000 mi. Oil looks really clean yet so do I wait or do it sooner. And why is there not an access cover for the oil filter housing on the skid plate? Thanks.

Check your Owner's Manual (OM) for the oil change interval. IIRC, it is 5000 miles. Some will debate the interval length. My thoughts are oil/filter are cheap and too often causes no damage. Follow the OM.

If this was my truck, I'd change the oil/filter, reset the Oil Change reminder and just drive. An alternate is to stop at Toyota to have the Service Desk run the history on your VIN, then get a print out of the record.

10k is the common interval for synthetic these days and is what Toyota care does. What does your window sticker say? I would guess your previous owner probably had it changed around 10k with Toyota care or the dealer did it before you bought it?

10k recommended. 5k if you just want peace of mind. I believe the only thing with a true access hole is the TRD Pro skid plate. The TRD Off Road does NOT have an access hole. You have to remove the entire skid plate which isn't terrible because it allows you to dump out all of the dirt and debris that has collected up there.

The pro skid plate has one.

The off road skid plate must be removed.

My guess is that the op’s truck has the pro or an aftermarket skid.

I just did an oil change on my OR last week, it DOES NOT have an access plate for the oil filter. You'll have to remove the skid plate, but its not too difficult, and gives you an opportunity to inspect around to check for leaks, etc.

Some pro tips: when you remove the bolt on the bottom of the oil filter canister, there is a small rubber o ring gasket, make sure you replace that---it should come with your OEM filters. There is a plastic tip which gets inserted into the bottom of the filter housing, which drains the remaining oil so its not a shit show when you take your housing off.

If it was me, i would replace the oil. You never know what the previous owner changed it with, how they did it, or anything like that. Start fresh and give yourself peace of mind by doing it correctly. Never know if dealer or owner forgot to change the filter or fucked up the gaskets

Also, manual says 6.2 qts, when i did mine, i drained all the oil, added 6 qts even and just moved on. I checked the oil the other day and its at about 3/4 on the stick so i just added a bit and we're good to go. You'll notice when you first change the oil its really really really difficult to read oil since its so thin and clear. So for me, i dont even check oil level after i change it, i add 6 and just drive it for a week or so until it darkens a bit

    Hope this helps

An access cover would take a minimum of two fasteners. The stock thin skid takes four fasteners and is pretty light, so Toyota probably figured it wasn't worth the trouble to deviate from the 2nd gen design.

Many thanks to all who responded. Good advice. I'll just change it and be done with it. Installing Fumoto oil drain plug also. Any thoughts on that?

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
For those buying Mobil 1, $10/5qt (max of 2 rebates per address) going on at the moment with w-mart having it on rollback. Makes it ~$12/5qts depending on your taxes. I just submitted mine for rebate last week which was already approved.

Oh and that 0-20 comes out fast and furious so better have some good ground coverage around the pan as it'll splash out of anything you have.

Used to always be $12/5 qt, oh well still better than nothing! Makes the oil changes super cheap though! I'll have to check to see how many i have left, i think i still have about 10 qts left

Not specific to Toyota but a friend who use to sell cars once told me that 10k oil change interval is mostly a marketing ploy to make a car seem like it is low maintenance. In the real world, city traffic and short trips to the mall put a car in the severe service range, meaning most drivers don't fall in the regular service 10k oil change interval even if they are not hard on their car.

Of course, if you do short term leases or trade in every few years, then ignore the above.

With all the marketing wank it's hard to know what to believe. That's why I sent my oil (trans and engine) to be analyzed. The recommended 12k on the oil after I sent it in at 10k

If your oil change doesn't look like the end of a Quentin Tarantino film then you're not doing it right.

Furmoto drain plug is great. I think they have free shipping now on an email I got. I change my oil at 5,000. Overkill, maybe, but it is not that hard to do.
