Only if the dealer can prove your mod was the reason for the issue.. throwing a lift kit on your truck doesn’t mean they won’t fix a broken window motor, but if the diff blows it’s a different story.

It's a true statement only if the mod is the cause of the failure. Some dealerships are far more liberal about this than others.

Also if you live in a state covered by Southeast Toyota Distributors, you can't get an actual Toyota factory extended warranty, just like you can't deal with Toyota Financial Services. You get a J&M warranty, which of course is part of SETD.

Can you explain more on this? I’m in Florida and I canceled a warranty in the beginning because it didn’t look Toyota legit and it was huge markup. I was considering the Toyota warranty since I’m coming up on 3yrs from the online reps that been mentioned in the past on this forum but now that sounds out from your post

I'm not an expert but I can share what I know. In Florida, extended warranties are considered insurance so whoever sells it has to be licensed in Florida to do so. This is why it's very difficult to find an out of state dealer to sell you an extended warranty as a Florida resident. It's sometimes hard to find their licenses in the state lookup, as the dealership name is often a DBA that has no resemblance to the corporate name they are licensed under. Here is the license lookup for the dealership I bought from, which is Treasure Coast Toyota of Stuart:

    upload_2021-6-28_5-34-18.jpg

Notice the Licensee name doesn't resemble the dealership name at all because it's a DBA. Also notice that they are not licensed for Toyota warranties. Because Southeast Toyota Distributors handles the F&I end of the business in FL as well as having an exclusive distributor agreement with Toyota for the vehicles, Toyota factory warranties aren't licensed here. Also, for they warranties they do sell, car dealerships don't discount because under FL insurance regulations it's considered a premium rebate and not a "discount" of an extended warranty sales price. So, you end up paying full retail for any warranty you buy. If it seems like your dealer F&I guy did discount it, he's playing around with other parts of the deal to get your total out the door price down and get you to say yes. The line on your sales order that contains the extended warranty will be at full retail.

Part of the thanks we get for living in FL is we get doubly screwed when we buy a Toyota here. We have an added layer in the distribution chain (Southeast Toyota Distributors) that gets their hand in our pocket in addition to the dealership. We can't use Toyota Financial Services (Southeast Toyota Finance is their financing arm), nor can we get a Toyota factory backed warranty, because of SETD's exclusive distributorship agreement with Toyota. If we do decide to accept an extended warranty, the state says the originator can't discount it, so we pay full retail or our deal gets muddied so our out the door price looks better. Welcome to the Sunshine State! :crapstorm:

just to add to this, Gulf States Toyota (GST) is also in the same boat as SET.

If I buy a truck in a non-SETD state, and get Toyota extended warranty, can I use it in GA/SETD state?

I told the Finance Guy that I wasn't buying a extended warranty, I was buying a Toyota. He was unfazed and responded with the fact that Toyota's reputation is with engine, chassis, etc. but not the electronics, and he pointed out that a head unit is about $6,500cdn.A fair point but for the 7 year/100k kms warranty the premium was about half that.

The truck already comes with a 3 year, 36k kms warranty so the dealership was really selling a 4 year, 64k kms extension for way too much $.

Again I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that if you are a resident of a non SETD state and buy at a non-SETD dealership there, then later move to an SETD state and change your address the Toyota warranty would be honored. Same if you happen live in a non SETD state and are in vacation in GA and have an issue. It should be honored at any Toyota dealership. Now, if you are actually a GA resident and went up to TN to make the purchase with your GA address I'm not sure what would happen.

I also thought the finance guy was smoking crack thinking that I would bite on a third-party extended warranty. Well after some back-and-forth I’m thanking the lord every night that I did end up purchasing the extended warranty because it’s covering 95% of the cost to fix my leaking timing cover ($4500 parts & labor) in my V6 third gen.

There was a TW member here not long ago who lived in the Atlanta metro area that went up to Chattanooga to avoid SETD, but extended warranties didn't come up. He just didn't want all the distributor add-ons they hit you with to inflate the price. I guess the best thing to do is give the KY dealer a call and ask how it would work. Also, check with the dealer in GA who you will use to service your truck.

Just to add to the above, I know here in FL you can't do that, because if the vehicle is registered in FL and the warranty is being sold to a FL resident then the dealer selling you the extended warranty has to be licensed to sell it by the FL Dept of Insurance. In GA it may be a different story if you don't have to same licensing requirements. They claim they have these regs to protect the consumer. In reality between SETD and the state we get royally screwed.

I think I did OK when I got my Tacoma 3 weeks ago. I had an extended warranty on my F250 (first time I ever got one but with all the electronics I figured it might be a good idea) that I traded in. The Toyota 10 year/100K mile extended warranty was $1500 (the finance guy initially said it was $2700) and I got back $800 from the warranty on the trade in so it ended up costing $700. That comes to $100/year since the electronics are covered for 3 years so I figured it's probably worth it.

How is it that the warranty covers 95% and not 100% AND how does a leaky timing cover repair cost $4,500.???

I say no to all extended warranty deals. Doesn't matter who or what it is. It's all a scam, or close to a scam.

He probably has a deductible on his extended warranty plan. You can opt for a 0 deductible, but it's more expensive.

It's not a scam, it's basically an insurance contract. You are paying someone to assume risk for you. Only you can decide what level of risk you think there is, and if what they charge to assume that risk is worth it to you. If not, you can self-insure and assume the risk yourself.

In my case, I bought my 2016 from a used car dealer and negotiated a vehicle service contract or “warranty”. Essentially my third-party warranty is acting like a type of insurance and I’m paying my deductible. At least that’s the way that I’m understanding it. My warranty is through CNA National and everything has been great so far.

The repair itself requires the engine to be pulled which is why it’s so expensive :(

Probably, already mentioned most extended warranties if not all, are not transferable.

I didn't buy one for the Taco, but a Mercedes 5/100 warranty on my new Sprinter diesel was $922.
