Look into BP Performance at their oil filter adapters. I purchased one and converted my cartridge type filter to a spin on. Great products!

Car salesmen usually don't know shit about a car that isn't in the brochure. Car companies usually pay people to test this stuff out.

You can click the link in my signature and see the tests I've been having done. 100k is soon to come.

As I understand it, it's 1 year regardless of mileage. I drove my Yaris about 1100 miles in all of 2020 so did an oil change in January '21 since the oil had been in there for about 15 months. It looked clean but had mostly been short trips so I went ahead and changed it.

    While I'm here...

I have always had Toyota cars that take 4.x quarts (Yaris, Corolla) so typically bought 5-quart jugs of oil and then put the extra in the lawnmower.

How are y'all handling the 6.x quart situation? It costs a lot more to buy 7 individual quarts, and adding two separate quarts is almost as much as just getting another 5-quart jug. Do you just get two 5-quart jugs and save the extra 'til the next oil change?

I guess I could switch to the Costco (Warren) 0W-20 since it comes in 6-packs -- but I like Mobil 1 EP. If the Yaris took 0W-20 (it is old and takes 5W-30) I could buy two 5-quart jugs and put 6.1 in the truck and 3.9 in the Yaris.

I paid my local dealer $80Cdn ($65US) (same price as Jiffy Lube) for a recent 0w20 oil and filter change. Worth it not to go thru the hassle of finding a place to do it myself (I live in an apartment), especially with the skid plate, filter cartridge hassle.

You cant' tell me that Toyota couldn't figure out a way to offer a twist on canister filter, accessible when you open the hood. The current set up is there to get more folks like me to just go to the dealer for an oil change.

I've bought 5 + 1 and 2 x 5. Save what was left of the 5 for next time. Usually stock up when oil is on sale so have several different viscosity jugs sitting around for future use.

I just get the Mobil 6 pack at Costco. I don't sweat the 0.2 quarts

Not really, it just reduces waste and probably overall cost.

It's not even hard to deal with. I don't get why people have issue with it or even want to go to a spin on.... plus you can ID issues without cutting open filters.

4-cyl SR is easy and has a traditional filter. :) Plus I like to let it drain for about 30 minutes and check everything out underneath. I did always use the dealer back when we had apartments.

I time it to the Mobil rebate ($15 off 5 quarts) so a 5-quart jug costs me about $10. Add a filter and the whole oil change is <$20.

10K is fine. In fact that is conservative if you're using synthetic oil. I've done 10K oil changes for 14 years and 215,000 miles on the Tacoma. I've never added a drop of oil between changes. Have done the same with every other vehicle in the driveway for about 30 years with no issues and several million combined miles. I'm at almost 1/2 million combined miles with what is on the driveway right now.

As of 3 years ago this guy had 1.2 million miles on his Tacoma with 8K-10K oil changes. He didn't keep up with miles, just changed oil once/month and he averaged 8K-10K per month.

Toyota Tacoma with 1.2 Million Miles Keeps on Chugging Along (yotatech.com)

I can get under my trucks easy enough to change those myself. The car, no. But many independent mechanics locally will change it for you for $10 if you furnish the oil and filter. That is what I do with my wife's car. That comes out cheaper than the oil change places and I trust my mechanic more than those guys.

Get the low profile Fumoto. The regular one is kinda low.

That does not apply to the 3rd gen. 3rd gens use low tension rings and need more frequent oil changes.

I'm in a similar situation. I just buy 0W30 and use it in the Taco, the Subaru (normally takes 5W30) and the lawn mower (normally 10W30). Remember 0W30 when cold is still way thicker than 5W30 at operating temperature, so 0W30 works in applications requiring 5W30 or 10W30. I've been buying Mobil 1 just because it's on sale most often.

Your friend is right, I know a few years back BMW had those long term oil changes...it was disastrous to the owner of those cars. Again they, like now Toyota too because of high cost of purchase somebody in the marketing department came up with "low cost of ownership" ...so under any circumstance do not go over 5k...specially if you plan on keeping it!

There's millions of data points showing that 10K is fine on the 3.5. Can you find one failed 3.5 because of the 10K miles interval? It's fine if you want to change yours at 5K but don't spread nonsense.

I get the 5 quart jugs of mobil 1 when they have their sales. I have an empty 1 quart container that i re-use so I pour oil in from the 5 qt to the marked line to make 1 qt + an unopened 5 qt= 6 total quarts. This way i dont have to mess with checking an un-readable dipstick.

I buy the 5 qt + 1 qt for the 1gr-fe. The used oil drains into a recycle type pan, then off to the local used oil recycler.

I check oil level at each fuel fill. Add if needed, rarely to never.

I need to buy a 3' chunk of 5/16" fuel/vacuum line to place on the nipple below the oil filter. Run the line down near the bottom of the engine close to the drain pan area. I really like the oil filter location and set up on this engine.

I can complete the oil change in about 10-15 minutes.

BTW, I use full syn oil and 5K changes.

    'preciate the info.

I know everyone's different, but I usually split the normal and severe schedules and do oil changes every 6-7k miles. We do a lot of short trips in TX - hot, stop-and-go traffic, etc.
