That's making a lot of assumptions about what can break. Never seen someone fix a blown transmission on the trail before. Seen plenty of guys stuck on the trail with blown transmissions though.

I'm not arguing that people can make some pretty invasive trail repairs, I'm just saying it seems a little naive to assume you're going to be able to do everything that could possibly happen.

Having a tow rig seems like a pretty nice insurance policy. Also I'd rather ride back home in comfort

Almost pulled the trigger today on a one-owner 2003 furd crude oil burner, couldn't agree on price. I am actively hunting. Tow pig, enclosed race trailer with a bathroom and shower cuz I ain't poopin in a bucket. Shit is EXPENSIVE but damnit my derriere needs air conditioning while doing the lord's work.

    Too many to remember
Tires shear off spindles, engines blow up, trannys blow up, things catch on fire and when the truck goes upside down... well yeah.

I’ve never not had a tow rig and it makes everything way more enjoyable. Being able to load the rig up with 15k lbs worth of crap including having a generator, welder and all the spare parts/fuel you could ever needs is what allows me to keep my truck going for an entire trip.

I also enjoy being able to sleep in a bed and have a real kitchen to cook in. And after a long weekend driving home in something other than your off road rig is really freaking nice.

I am not going to even think about major components going kaboom yet.

I mean, I get it to a point. But if you saw where I live you would understand where I’m coming from a little more. We literally live in the woods up here. We drive our rigs from home to the trail and back. Cali is a big place. The UP of Michigan, not so much lol.

Just different worlds is all, really. My truck would not be streetable in an area like yours. Geared low, single piece driveshaft, she’s tapped at 60. But our highest speed limit within 75 miles is 55 lol.

Plus, it’s a pretty good story when you’re not back on blacktop until 5AM!

All joking aside, I do get it. But I’m also not afraid to do some pretty serious work on the trail either. I just haven’t got to the point of needing a tow rig.

Sooo.. All this talk about blowing shit up.. is anyone concerned about grenading their front diff with 934 CVs?

If I end up going LT, that would probably be my main concern. Driving home with no diff:rofl:

Next weak link is the ADD shaft and tube. I’ve got some pretty decent respect for these front diffs though, I use my front locker lots and aside from one CV I’ve had good luck

I was kinda hopeful the 300m shafts would be a little more forgiving than 4130. Lower yield, similar ultimate strength, more forgiving to torsional forces. Time will tell.

Technically even mid-travel you should be strapped to protect the CVs. Should you worry about the front diff if you upgrade? Depends on how you drive. Somethings always going to break if you drive at the limit. So if that’s how you plan on driving/crawling the truck, take your pick of what to break. CV or diff.

I’m locked with ARBs front and rear and I usually only engage the front once I find myself in a low traction scenario. Requires me to stop, engage, and smoothly induce power through the drivetrain. No mashing the throttle or rock bouncing for me.

I’m not fully following your stance on this. What does a front locker have to do with where you strap? Most MT setups are limited by the shock length anyway. If you have binding issues it’ll be a problem weather locked or not.

Yes you’re correct, idk why I worded it like that with the locker. I was thinking about CVs.

I have yet to break a CV, but Ive gone through 4 inner boots in the course of a year and I’m only mid travel (for now). Granted boots aren’t catastrophic failure but they’re sure inconvenient.

I’m going to be putting in my order for 934 axles come July, so no need. Thank you though
