Hey everybody. New guy here. Just bought a 2021 Taco TRD Sport and I want to get some opinions. I'd like to make the ram air scoop function. Of course from the factory it doesn't, but there has to be a kit out there that puts a new scoop in the hood and goes straight to the existing air filter box. I'm not a mechanic, and if it's newer than 1985 i'm not much on working on them, so feel free to elaborate like i'm 5. Thanks in advance for your input.

No kit for it, also every time it rains your intake will fill up with water.

    Hi and welcome,

There would be no benefit to the kit if it was available. You can do a cold air intake, but again not much if any gain would be made there. You can put on a snorkel which is functional and has a benefit if you do off road driving

Would you mind explaining how there would be no benefit?

aside from f'ing with the non-functioning scoop, what are you hoping to accomplish? there are some effective ways to mildly improve performance, but not like that for sure.

Ram air does nothing until you hit well past 100mph.. If your just looking to get cold air from outside the truck, then look no further than the stock intake, it already draws air from the front fender well (outside of the engine bay). The stock intake is the same as the tundras, and that uses a v8, so we have no restrictions in our intake systems at this point.

I appreciate that input. Like I said in my og post, not a major mechanic on anything this new. I had suspicions that the intake in the truck was a factory cold air, but couldn't confirm. It seems like that's what you're telling me.

Yeah, really there are no worth it mods for the intake on our trucks. They are already the best they can be. If you want more noise, you can get new couple pipe (goes from airbox to throttle) but that just makes it louder, not faster.

    Hi

Welcome to Tacomaworld. There are aftermarket scoop hoods with a functional hood scoop and intake but the gains aren't really worth it for the cost of the upgrade.

I believe there is negative air presure around the factory skewp.

Best genner here but the science would carry.

I cut the back out of the fibreglass insert on mine and just have the grille. It's not plumbed into the air intake system though. That said however I have noticed on my OBDII monitor intake temps are lower as are under hood temps (measured with a Fluke IR thermometer) and at lights you can just see the heat mirage pouring and billowing out of the scoop.

I do have a snorkel though and a much more direct intake path and while it has done nothing for performance it has increased throttle response and miles per gallon noticeably.

Also using the OBDII monitor I can see a (negligible but recordable and repeatable) increase in manifold pressure with throttle closed and have even hit 2psi of pressure for a second or two in the manifold at 60mph when going from wide open throttle to closed throttle when changing gears or such.

Ram air is definitely a thing and it does help (even well below 100mph) but it's not going to provide any noticeable performance in the realm of speed or acceleration.

I think the Tacoma scoop location is in a dead area. A good high pressure spot is at the base of the windshield like the cowl induction on the old Chevys or raise the scoop at least an inch above the hood surface to get some air flow.
