4X4 binding issue?

just bought a 2001 xtra cab 2.7 manual. things runs great. new to the 'yota scene so not overly familiar with these exact trucks. do a lot of reading on here and am excited to see my new project 2 or 3 years down the line. so anyway, when i put it in 4 high and make a sharp turn, the truck acts as if the brakes are being depressed(but they aren't) then even once it is straightened out it is heard to move and hard to get out of 4 wheel drive. this is done on pavement, havent had it off road yet. no work done to truck that i know of. also, is the rear locked in 4, b/c when i make low speed turns in 4, it drags the inside wheel, thought i'd ask b/c i didnt think lockers were available on this model?...thanks guys

 

i do understand that. since it is a new truck ( to me) i just want to make sure everything is in working order. this was all done on pavement at speeds lower than 5 mph. was curious because the dealer where i bought it (toyota dealership) said that was normal. sorry if i sound like a huge noob. i never seen that with any of the people i know.

Pretty normal. The tires need to be able to slip. When you engage 4wd your front and rear differential are locked together. When you turn in 4wd your front wheels are spinning at a different rates than the rear wheels.

It's not a good idea to drive in 4wd on dry pavement unless you are going straight. Find a gravel parking lot or road somewhere to test the 4wd.

 

Why does everyone always run 4wd on the pavement?????

 

I definitely dont. To the OP....your are going to f#!k something up if you engage 4wd on pavement and turn. Just a matter of time!

didnt want to do it on pavement but also wanted to make sure it worked. not too many off road opportunities in wash dc except maybe for someones front yard..

could have always gone down to the mall in between the capital and wash monument and ripped up the grass that our gov't has spent millions on for the past 10 years trying to re-grow the grass

Even when in 4WD offroading on hard dirt or packed rock/gravel I've got in the habit to plan ahead and make wide turns. If I'm cornered to where a sharp turn is required I back up and go forward gradually a couple times when possible to lessen the chance of any binding.

 

I usually just punch it and get the wheels spinning. It helps it turn easier and takes the stress off the diff

There was a brief interlude on the way home for donuts in a Kohl's parking lot before dinner at Ruby Tuesday's.

All told, it was deemed a successful day.
