So when you bring it back to Ca to register; what are you paying? You have to get a smog, weight the truck, registration fees, taxes?

I looked up/"built" the same truck with my zip (Maine) and an Atlanta zip and while the MSRPs were identical, all the port/dealer add ons were much more expensive down there. Matts/sills were $248 and if memory serves me correctly the bed lights were $129. But there were also a lot of add-ons & packages through SET that were not available up here.

No surprise. SETF (Southeast Toyota Finance) is a horrible operation and they control the market down here. Overpriced add ons with their stupid packages they add at the port. I can’t stand them and honestly the dealers don’t like them either. They add in ToyoGuard 699.00 on every vehicle which is basically 2 oil changes and two tire rotations. You have to negotiate that out of the deal every time. Total shit company.

Damn, that sucks! Sorry about that. Does each region have their own umbrella financial arm? I've heard stories about SETF but don't recall anything similar in other regions.

Great thing about some leases is the positive equity you can have in them if the residual is low enough.

In April of 2020 dealers were panicking, I got a fully loaded 2020 TRD off road 4x4 for $350 a month ZERO down. Not even kidding, not even a security deposit. Truck MSRP is $45k, has every option except advanced technology package. But all that is, is really a camera on the front of the truck.

Residual is $33,880. Right now I could buy out the lease, pay NC 3% highway use tax and still make like $4000- $5000 on it. Truck has like 3800 miles. Its INSANE. Im in a very enviable position simply because I leased.

You might ask "why not just trade it in to Carvana or a dealer and take the free money?" I cant because US Bank is wise to that and 3rd party buyouts are quoted market value. Only I can buy the truck for the residual. But NC's 3% tax makes it doable for me.

@Juggar Guessing it isn't your DD if you've managed to average ~270mi/mo. Suspect you'd still be in the black right now but much less so if you had a more typical annual mileage.

Its not my daily, its a fun 2nd vehicle for the forest service trails around Western NC. My 2018 Chevy Volt simply doesn't cut it on those "roads".

Figured for $350 a month how could I afford NOT to pick it up? Turns out it was a good call. Some days I get in it and think, how the hell did I end up getting a $45k truck for $350 a month? Some people have this same truck and pay like $800 a month.

Oh yeah, familiar with Franklin. I lived in just outside Atlanta their first three years in NC so traversed through Franklin when going to visit.

keep in mind, paying sticker price is about 12-13% more than you would pay for the truck either at the beginning of the year OR when inventory comes back. that is probably half to 3/4 of the entire deprecation of the vehicle driving it 4-5 years and 100k miles. when inventory comes back you're going to take an even bigger hit, because prices will be normalized, in the 4-5 years of ownership that many trade off in. paying and extra 5 grand for the truck just to have it now vs 6 months from now, seems like a waste of money. you're paying nearly $1000/mo extra to have the instant gratification. I am just going to keep driving what I have already. I recommend others do the same.

Agree. Toyota has enough chips now. They are dealing with backorders and unprecedented demand. Give it a few months for the "free" money to dry up and dealers' Tacoma inventory to catch up.

I hear ya and it's all true.....but in the end it is all about the overall deal. If a guy can get an outrageous trade in allowance and get a fair deal in a new truck it's a wash. Maybe I'm wrong, but one could wait for prices to fall back in line and still do the same deal for the same difference in 6 months. In the end you're financing the same amount. What you said is entirely accurate in some situations. On the DCSB ORs there is only about 3k difference between invoice and sticker and one can be had at invoice or below all day long in a regular market. That's about 7.5% off on a 40K truck. Anyway, it is a crazy market but deals can be made.

For the amount of money dealers wanted for loaded off road models, I ended buying a pro- there was only 2k diff and I did not have to wait for it. I ended up 500.00 below Msrp

That was my reasoning as well. With some of the prices I'm hearing for a loaded off road it's actually just as much as my deal. I think MSRP for a pro was close to the best deal you could get before all of this so getting it now is even better if it's MSRP.

Saw that too when driving through San Bernadino the other day. Lots of Tacomas on the front row, ready to go. Didn't catch if they were 4x4 or 2WD but they had at least 15 or so.
