It's a good time of year to fry some squash and green tomatoes so after the first wash a good fry is never a bad thing

Lodge have a decent season from the factory but can be made better. If its gonna be a camping skillet and get beat up I really wouldn't bother. Just go heavy on the oil or cook some greasy food the first few times cooking with it so stuff doesn't stick, it'll naturally build up season over time.

A little of this and a little of that.
Put together a “cheater” chicken pot pie with some leftovers and a pop biscuit can in my Dutch oven for dinner tonight.

Well folks, it's my favorite time of year to get the old pot out, & get a fire going outback. Got this ol Lodge at a rondivous many moons ago. It's been a good'n, no matter how many times the uninitiated have tried to kill it.

Just wanted to share a little project I am working on to strip and re-season these four pieces of cast iron that have been given to me as gifts over the years.

The two smaller pans arguably could have been left alone and dont really need any love at all. But when I get a new piece of cast iron from someone used, I personally like to strip it down and re-season it myself. Both the smaller 4.5" pan and larger 7" pan are pretty clean with some light pitting that I think would more or less handled with proper seasoning. The light pitting wasnt obvious prior to stripping them.

    As for the griddle...

Well damn this is a pretty piece but that seasoning is nasty as hell and caked on thick. The cooking surface is absolutely pristine underneath though. I cannot wait to get the crud off and re-season this thing. There is some light surface rust on the bottom but that is no big deal to me. For the cooking surface, I will hit it primarily with oven cleaner and steel wool with some light-medium butter knife scraping to clear the caked on crap and get to a smooth surface again.

That big old 4" deep rust bucket you see was a parting gift I got from @johntoyota before he moved to Ten C's.

It as some of the nastiest, deepest pitting I have seen on cast iron, but I think I can salvage it and turn it into a respectable pot once again. That's getting short term vinegar baths with steel wool scrubbing, then likely an orbital sander to try to deal with the putting and restore a smoother cooking surface.

Cant promise when they will be back in service, but I am excited to double my cast iron collection with the restoration of these pieces.

So I sanded out my lodge pan with an orbital sander last year, and I think I’m gonna call it successful. It’s getting all seasoned up and doing eggs is so nice now. Nice and smooth like my big Wagner

Agreed @Pablo8, this thread doesn’t get a whole lotta action but the content is high quality and oddly satisfying.

My Wagners are by far my favorite for all around cooking. Always smooth and non stick. Now the lodge is so so and my next favorite would be my 10 inch erie Griswold. Sweet little cooker!
